s5 shift **** removal

I in need to replace my bushings, but can't seems to get my shift **** out. (I searched already). The **** turns easily left and right, but dosnt unscrew for some reason. I actually spun it counterclockrise and made to full turns. After a closer look, it seems that the whole stick rotates along with the ****. Is it normal? Are you supposed to use a something like a vise for the stick and turn the **** to remove it?

It should just unscrew. Try putting the car in a gear such as reverse and try unscrewing it. Made it easier for me.

Attach a pear of locking plyers below the shifter, then while holding them, turn the shift **** until it spins free. After that remove the boot and unscrew the 3 screws ontop of the transmission and your shifter will be removed.

i had that problem to i thought i would never get the thing off you just have to go all out but no it shouldent spin the whole thing.there is a pin that keeps the ball part of the shifter from spining if you some how snaped that off that could be bad.

be careful, my 86 gxl's shifter didn't unscrew like i thought it did(bottom section) the **** indeed does unscrew but the 86 shifter is held together with a rubber seal, not a screw in section. now i have to wrench mine back into its post from time to time

You can actually remove the shifter without removing the ****.
