Why does the moulding piece on the right rear under the gas tank door surrounding the side marker light have the overhanging border whereas the other side dosen't?

I know it's random, but it's one of those things that I just noticed and couldn't figure out

 

as covered quite a few times, it is to protect the lens against gas spills
