S5 motor in a S4

Hi all, this has most likely been covered before, but nothing came up when I did a search. Can someone tell me what exactly is involved in installing a S5 motor in a S4 chassis? I've read the occasional comment from people telling everyone to "stick to the same series". I'm wondering why and what parts exactly are needed to make this swap work.

I think the main reason for the "stick to the same series" the plugs for the ECU are different not a simple plug and play

Thanks for the link, but my question would be if I had a complete S5 engine, with ecu, harnesses etc. Why would I keep anything from the old S4? Shouldn't the S5 be able to just bolt into the S4 chassis?

Ok, pouring over your posts now... but let me clarify a few things that make what I want to accomplish slightly different from what you did. I do not need the accesories to work ie. fan, heating, interior lights, power steering etc... No emissions... and worse case senario, I don't even need the spedo to work. Hell, all I want is for the car to run and 5 foward gears. Not even asking for reverse here... I will be doing the swap with the motor, the harnesses and the S5 ecu. In your experience, what problems will I run into, what wiring do I need to redo? Thanks!

I did this to my car last year. The problem as everyone is saying is that the ECMs and sensors are not the same which leads to a wiring nightmare. Mine was done because I had an S5 motor available to me. I simply had to swap over EVERYTHING from the S4 to the S5. You will need an EGR blockoff plate because they are slightly different. Also the S5 temp sensor may have a different resistance? You don't really gain anything in HPs because you're basically running the same old motor. But it's really not that difficult to do it this way. Good luck

Yeah I'm basically in the same position that you were in last year. I have a S5 available but I drive a S4... Thanks for the input...
