Exclamation S5 BNR 3 or 4???!

I just got done talking with Brian over at BNR and am trying to decide on which turbo to get.

The mods that are in the car now are:

Streetported engine
Greddy FMIC
Walboro pump
MSD Ignition
Will have Microtech or Haltech

Fuel - 720prim/1600sec
I have a wideband/egt

My goal with the car is 300rwhp. I want to go drag racing with her and autox.

The autox goal makes me lean more towards the Stage 2. However, I feel I might want more power with the Stage 3. He was saying that the boost control on a S5 Stage 3 isnt as good as a Stage 2 because of the S5 wastegate design.

Anybody have any input on what the Stage 3 is like in autox?

Thanks

James

If you only want 300 RWHP, then I would go for the Stage III.

BTW...your injectors are WAY overkill for the power level you are shooting for, but I guess it can't hurt as long as you tune it properly.

I dunno...it seems like that is also possible with the stage 2...

This set up has dynoed 332 RWHP at 14 psi of boost, also has ran an ET and MPH of 12.3 at 114. The car will reach peak boost around an estimated 3800 RPM.

And yeah, I suppose the fuel is overkill. However, the 1600cc injectors are 10 bucks cheaper than the 720cc on rx7store.net. So, what the heck!

GT35r with your port and you should be good to go for 350-400 whp with other supporting mods.

Well the main advantage of getting a hybrid is that it bolts to the stock manifold which no other aftermarket turbo does. A full to4 setup will be better but the price goes up dramatically from a hybrid since you need to buy a manifold and wastegate as well. Probably even oil/water lines too. Also with a full turbo setup you probably want to go full standalone as well to protect your investment and get the most power out of it.

J,

For autocross etc, you are going to want a smaller stage. The stage 4 is a great turbo, and I dont regret its purchase, but it would KILL you in autocross!

I dunno.. I have heard alot of people complain about how thier BNR has crappy spool, etc etc... But they probably just slapped that bad boy on, and figured thier car was ready go burn up the 1320. Same mistake I made.

Thing is, with proper tuning, that turbo is a wonderful unit! It will lag, there is no getting around that, but its not half as bad as some of the other bigger turbo setups I have seen. I have also (and cant explain why) picked up some spool when I went from TMIC to FMIC.

my old turbo was a stock s4 with the twin scroll removed

my current turbo is a s5 upgraded to the stage II (h3 compressor wheel, stock exhuast wheel clipped 10 degrees)

The hybrid spools up faster than my old turbo

That is great to hear you went with Stage 2. That is what I am going to get!

You get her on the dyno?

What intercooler you running?

What AFRs have you tuned for? Or EGTs?

Haven't been on the dyno in a couple years. I plan on going to the strip in a couple of weeks, hopefully I'll have some decent trap speeds to report.

Still on the stock intercooler....hoping to go front mount by summer. Currently tuned in the high 10's due to being on the stock interheater, and naturally being conservative with my engine. Past fuel cut I retard ignition 1 degree per pound of boost.

It's not a rocket car, but it's certainly pretty quick. With a decent launch I'd expect high 12's currently.
