TN S4 TII stalling, blowing engine fuse when I hit the brakes!

I hope this odd issue is worthy of a new thread. To start, my car is an '87 TII. The only aftermarket things on it are an electric fan (Taurus fan wired in with a fuse, relay, and adjustable T-stat) and a cone filter. So it's pretty much bone stock, and the wiring all looks to be unmolested throughout the car. Now on to my issue...

I've been having the classic issue with the car stalling when I hit the brakes for a few months. Once it gets warmed up, I can tap the brakes and it will just die. So I did a TPS adjustment and got it set in spec, and I bumped the BAC up a little. The car ran better than it has in years. But before I could even get it out of the neighborhood, I tapped the brakes and it died again. This time it blew the 15A engine fuse. So I replaced the fuse and drove the car to work the next day. I blew 3 fuses on the way home! I ended up swapping out the 20A brake light fuse to get the car home.

So I'm at a loss here as to what would tie in the brake stalling issue with the engine fuse blowing. It doesn't always blow the fuse when it shuts off, and it seems to only do it when the engine is warm. Anyone know where I should start? Could the alternator cause an issue like that? I'd rather not just plug in a 30A fuse and see what catches fire first.

I guess I'm not the only one stumped by this. Any help at all would be appreciated.

I don't see a relationship b/t the brakes and the Engine fuse unless there has been some unauthorized miswiring done in the past.

Try new fuses and then remove the plugs from the CPU, NOT the ECU. Then go for a ride in the neighborhood and stomp the brakes a few times. Carry spare fuses with you to get back home. About all this will do is eliminate the CPU and brake lights themselves. The brake circuit passes thru the CPU on the way to the brake lights.

Even that makes little sense. Engine fuse has zip to do with the CPU if memory serves.

It makes me wonder about the fan installation. Where did you get the source of power from? What plug is supplying power to the elect fan? Eliminate the fan. PUll its plug and try a ride with brake stomping.

Edit: I re-read the post. Fan is installed with a fuse and that wire goes to????????

Yeah I just looked over the FSM wiring diagrams, there should be no connection there... My guess is you have a wiring nightmare where some wires are exposed inside the harness and the 15amp fuse is getting grounded out (or overamped) when the brake is applied.

Love to help you brother, but electrical issues are hard to diagnose.. I would have to say it may be related to the the efan... if everything else is stock. eh... you can come over and check to see if it all lines up to my stock t2...

Well I appreciate the info, any help is better than no help! I took it out for a drive tonight and had no problems what-so-ever. I just took it around the neighborhood and then up the road to the gas station, with a passenger seat full of spare fuses. I'll try your CPU suggestion, Hailers. It doesn't make any sense to me either, although electrical issues often don't.

The fan is wired to the battery +12V through a relay and a 30A fuse, and grounded to the chassis in the engine bay. It switches on and off via external thermostat. It's all independent of the factory wiring. I've never seen any indication of re-wiring in this car. It was bone stock when I bought it 4 years ago. I'll try running it without the fan as well, although I can't do that for long in this summer heat.

Forget my fan idea. It's not wired into any stock wiring. So ignore that bad puppy of an idea.
