S4 TII and S5 TII: What Parts Will Swap? Wiper Switch? Fenders? Rear End? Others?

I already know most of the differences between the Series 4 and 5 cars but is there a comprehensive comparison guide so that people (like me) will stop asking this question? I myself just need to know because I have an S5 TII track car project and an S4 TII parts car that I might want to take parts off of. Firstly I was thinking of using the transmission; I heard the 5th gear ratio was different but other than that are the two transmissions pretty much the same? The S5 tranny has bad synchros and I think the S4 tranny is in better shape, plus has an ACT clutch and 8lb flywheel. I also heard the S5 has a larger fuel tank, so I was thinking of swapping in the S4 fuel tank for weight-saving purposes, at least until I can afford a fuel cell. What are the capacities between the two? Are the fenders and doors pretty much the same between the two? Also, is the wiper switch assembly pretty much the same as well? The one in the S5 doesn't work. The car also came with a GReddy FMIC and Energy Suspension bushings which I'm wondering if they'll fit the S5.

I guess if you were in doubt, you could check the model numbers on the parts and if they are the same you could just put it on the car.

Well, if you look closely at the S4 and the S5 you'll notice a slight difference in the mouldings. Also in the S5 GTU and GTU's models you can find aluminum fenders and hood. A lot of S5 i'm not sure which models also came with Viscous type LSD.

exterior - side moldings are different, revised front and rear bumpers, aero mirrors are shaped differently, fog lights with integrated brake ducts on s5 vs. s4 only ducting, clear front markers stock on s5, taillights and license bracket different.

interior - all of the major switches are interchangable. the gauge bezels are angled slightly differently, the dummy cluster surround and cluster angles differently and the indicators are different. seats, carpet, and most cosmetic pieces interchangable. s5 has auto seat belts, different shifter, radio surround is of higher quality. the rear plastic trim around the top of the hatch in the cargo area is different, the cargo lamp is different (s4 on hatch strut s5 on cargo trim). center consoles, glove boxes, dashes are interchangable.

electronics - completely different! the cpu located in the drivers kick panel is futher integrated on the s5 to include the anti-theft unit amongst other things. the speaker amp mounted below the glove box is different, the cruise unit is different, the s5 power door lock assembly and auto seat belt controls are 99% untransferable. the dash harness, rear chassis harness to fuse box junctions are all completely different. dash cluster pinouts are different. the logicons are the same as well as the heater/ac motors. no knock box or power steering control unit on s5.

engine/drivetrain - well there are quite a bit of control and sensor differences, however mechanically the major components are interchangable. the manual transmissions, rear ends, suspension (non adjustable), brakes, axles, control arms, sway bars (although the sway bar endlinks are different, metal on s4 plastic on s5), s4 front lower control arms have unboltable lower ball joints and s5 are considered "unserviceable". the front and rear subframes are interchangle, brakes and all associated lines ect are interchangable (although i am not sure on the abs equiped models) clutch hydralics are interchangable. front covers are not due to s5 have electronically controlled omp. throttle bodies are mechanically similiar but have different tps setups. injectors are different impedance and have different connectors. mafs are of different design (s4 flapper door s4 plunger type), rotor housing are slightly different (visit www.rotaryresurrection.com, kevin has a great write-up on mechanical differences).

so enough of my rambling... sorry but i just finished gutting a 91 n/a automatic and swapping all of my 87 tii EVERYTHING in while retaining the 91 exterior and interior. i dont know off the top of my head if the s5 tII trans has a different 5th gear ratio, nevermind a quick trip to the specs sticky has proven different gear ratios so yes they are different but interchangable. the clutch and flywheel will be able to swap from the s4 to the s5 however you will need an s5 auto counterweight on the flywheel as the s4 one that should currently be bolted to it wont be the right weight to counter balance the rotating assembly. yes the s5 has a larger gas tank again the specs sticky will give you exact numbers. the door harnesses are different as far as the plugs that junction them to the main harnesses, however the power window and switch, mirror, light and lock switches will plug right in. the s4 harness probably wont have the power door lock intergration. i hope that this helps and is accurate. if not i am sure someone will correct me.
