s4 or s5 TII???

So i finally have enough money to buy a turbo 2 (hurray!). now the question lies: Which one is better??? I know the s5 make more hp, but they weigh a little more. Does the increase in power make them VERY different? What would you guys recomend?
Thanks a bunch

- Carlos

What do you plan on doing to the car? Keeping it close to stock with just minor intake and exhaust mods? Or going all out and shooting for lots of power?

initially, i'd like to keep it stock and learn to drive it. Eventually i'd definately upgrade for power, but not insane power, maybe 250hp or 300hp TOPS.
Thanks

keeping it close to stock - series 5

If you plan on doing more than intake and exhuat s4 all the way. It's cheaper and lighter. You can swap on the s5 turbo and mannifold, and you also get the mechanical OMP, and I like that more than electrical. series 5 t2's do look cleaner, but you can add the s5 wheels, bumper and rear spoiler to the s4 if you really like the s5 lines.

What makes the s5 stronger, though, i'd think that it's better to have a stronger car to begin with, right?
Does the S5 generate more power because of higher boost levels?

You really can't go wrong ether way. They are both great cars. Just look for ether, the best car & value in your search area. Test drive both & see what you prefer?
I like the looks of the later 89+ Turbo's, but I love a lighter car too.
Ether way, the T2's are a great high performance true sports car value! Easy & cheap to mod too!
Good luck/skill!

I like S4's because thats what I drive.

Seriously, S5's weigh quite a bit more, have a higher compression ratio and many other things. I do, however, have the S5 looks on my S4.

You do the math. =)

I'd say just get whatever you can find the better deal on, I'm looking at a s4 right now, just because I found one in good shape near me, I would also be looking at a s5 if I found one.

Yeah, 130 lbs isn't much unless you're going for a stripper race car.

No doubt about it, buy an S5.
I purchased an '88TII new and Mazda ended up buying it back and I got my '89TII at dealer cost.
Just to summarize trailing plug problems, high exhaust temps, gas fumes.
Corrected all in the S5.

I believe the S4 and S5 turbo engines had the same redline. I may be mistaken though.

ehh....maybe you're right. I know the NAs more than the turbos.

But either way, the S5 looks dead sexy next to an S4. Don't get me wrong, though, I love my S4.

i got an 88TII and i love it....

granted the s5 do look better, for the most part you can make a s4 look like a series 5....

im gonna paint my rubber trim, and eventually switch out the taillights....

bottom line....Rx-7 is an Rx-7
both are great and REAL fast.....

S4: Reasons why:
1. OMP is easy to delete
2. Less weight
3. US only: No F@$%!$@ Mouse belts
4. Better looking taillights IMHO
5. Replaceable Ball Joints
6. Clutch Type LSD vs. Vicious in the S5

Good points, but...

1. Why would you want to delete it? I thought the S4's advantage was that the mechanical OMP was simply more reliable and easier to deal with.

3. Mouse belts?

5. Forgot about that one, very good point.

6. Yeah... but with me, the stock LSD is getting replaced by something better anyway, so it really doesn't matter what type it is to begin with.

I hope the S4 I want to buy is still for sale come February. But I don't think the car is going to last that long.

1) Some people like pre-mixing. The S5 OMP is electronically controlled which is why banzai prefers the S4 since its easier to remove.

2) Mouse belts are the automatic belts. I myself don't like them either. If I had an S5, I'd do an S4 belt swap.

6) Theres a tradeoff. The S4 clutch type LSD locks up faster but most of them are worn anyways. The viscous lasts longer though.

1) Ah yes, forgot about that. I was premixing my 'vert and shortly after I started the injectors crapped out. It never ran quite the same ever again. So I'll never premix again if I can avoid it.

2) Doh, ok. Yeah, I dislike those as well. But that doesn't matter too much to me since I'll be installing a roll bar at the very minimum in my next FC, which means I'd be able to completely remove the mouse belts and run a six point harness.

6) I heard Mazda Comp sells a good rebuild kit for those, true?

I was looking out for an S5 Turbo II, but after reading some of the points made in this thread I think I'll go looking for an S4 instead.

I have weighed my S5 TII a couple times. Mine only weighs 2882lbs. I've still got everything intact (AC/PS/Leather interior). Only thing removed is the Air Pump and ACV which is maybe 20lbs total.

I think id have to agree with gsracers line of thought that if you want to build a competitve machine for most forms of racing, id go with S4. If you want something more compliant and moderate, then S5.
