S4/S5 intake question

Ok, I know this is probably a stupid question, but I have heard that on s4's you need an adaptor for a cone filter, but on an s5, you don't. How come all the kits I see for intakes for s5's have other hardware if your supposed to just be able to bolt up the filter to the stock intake pipe?

The 89-92 Air Flow Meter has a flange on it that you can mount a cone filter onto.

The 84-88 does not.

Its easier and cheaper to make 1 kit that will fit a wider range of cars, even if some people will have left over parts. Look at radiators. Not hi-pro rads, just stock replacements for an every day car like a Ford Escort or Mazda MX-3. An OEM replacement radiator is going to have hook ups for auto tranny cooler lines, even if you order one for a car with a manual tranny. Its easier for them to make 1 type to fit all cars instead of 1 type for a manual car, and another for an automatic.
