S4 S5 cruise computers Interchangable?

Are the S4 S5 Cruise Control Computers Interchangable?

If so do I have to change any wires around?

Hailers, I saw your post about fitting an S4 switch into an S5,

Car: S4 with S4 switch and actuator with S5 CCC.

Thanks

I used a series five switch in a series four. I had no idea they were different when I got the switch out of the wreckyard. When it did not work I wondered why. I took the wiring diagram and a meter to the pins on the switch to find out why.

What I found out is that when you press MAIN, SET, RESUME or COAST, what you do is put a ground on that particular wire that goes to the Cruise Control Unit. I found that the pins on the SWITCH were arranged different on the series five vs the series four. So all I did is rearrange the WIRES at the switch plug to fit the proper PIN on the switch.

When done I went for a ride. When I pressed the SET function I found it worked for a moment but then did not work anymore. I found that if I permantely depressed the MAIN button with a piece of wire jammed into the Main buttons side, then the switch worked like any normal series four would. I drove this way for several years and thousands of cruise miles. Like Icemark said, the switch is not of the exact same shaped as the series four. That never bothered me.

No, you can't use a series five Cruise Control Unit in a series four, mainly because the plug on it has a 17 pin plug and the series four only 13. It could be done if you had a plug for the CCU or series five CC harness b/t the switch and CCU.

So you have a series four switch and actuator but a series five CCU. Do you have a plug/harness for the series five CCU? Or how about this, I have a spare series four CCU. Are you interested in a swap? Your series five CCU with my series four CCU? Uh, you pay shipping? I own no series five cars but have an interest in owning a series five CCU.

There's a jpg of two cruise control switches attached. The one on the left is a series five. Note how the display (red line) on the series five is slanted at an angle compared to the series four at the right.

Note how I used a piece of tie wrap to hold the series five MAIN switch permantely depressed. That's how I used it on a series four along with having to rearrange the wires in the electrical plug.

The series four on the right I THINK has a problem. I got this switch in a spare surround that came with my latest possesion. All the functions seem to work except the MAIN switch. When I depress the MAIN switch I should get continuity on the bottom left two pins on the back of the switch. It seems this only happens at random so the contacts inside must be a little goofed up. I could overcome that by splicing the two wires at the PLUG together permanently. But this is just a spare and not in use, so it ain't a gonna happen til I need to.

Yeah, the series four latches when you push it in and releases when you depress again (from earlier question on another post).
