rx7 worries
rx7 worries
hi everyone, i just bought my first rx7, 1988 glx. i am having some problems with the car and i need some help please, First the fuel gauge and the coolant temp gauge dosent work, The fuel gauge is stuck at full , ive tried gounding it out but it does nothing. the coolant gauge only goes up about a quarter of the way and stops. Which coolant sensor feeds the gauge? Also it idles like at 1000 , is there a common vaccum leak on the 1.3s like the intake manifold gasket and when i put it in to gear it wants to die????????? Can anyone help me im new to rotory motors and no one in my town has any experience with these motors.
Thank you
steve g

Idles at 1000?.....Did you try the screw at the top of the throttle body?
It's at the very very top, check in the Faq's for pics. That will let you turn the throttle down.
Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong so I can learn.

i tried that it will go down but when i put it in gear it wants to die. its an auto. also the fuel was old and i drained it today , Also does the fuel pump kick on when you crank the engine or when the key is turned to the run position?????????? thanks
Welcome to the forums.
Congratulations on your purchase of a rx7 gxl.
Before worrying about vacuume leaks make sure your car is thoroughly tuned up.
Get a haynes manual or a FSM and do everything they recommend for 60,000 miles.
Locate the initial set coupler in the front driver side of the car. Put a piece of wire in both sides of it as a jumper. The idle should go down to 750. If the car dies or idles well below 750 you will need to adjust the idle speed up as per the manual. You may also need to adjust the plates in the throttlebody, and the throttle position sensor. Also check your belts especially on the alternator, they should be nice and tight.
Every FC owner should have:
1. A manual
2. A multimeter
3. A hand vacuume pump
These tools are invaluable in troubleshooting little problems like this.
After a thorough tune up get a can of carb cleaner and start checking for vacuume leaks especially around the throttlebody.

I think considering the car is new to you, there is no obvious leaks, and you dont know how well maintained it has been you could save yourself a lot of trouble by doing the tuneup. Once you have ruled out improper tuning or faulty sensors you can dive into the whole vacuume leak routine with a can of carb cleaner.
Meh..I don't believe in the carb cleaner way of checking for vac leaks. I don't own a hand pump either, so :-)
I'm betting you haven't replaced your vacuum lines yet. :-) Well, I'm gonna copy and paste my peice from another thread..
Do all of this, and your FC will thank you for years. It will also eliminate almost all problems you currently have, or will have soon.
Flush coolant
Change oil
Send out injectors for service w/ all new o-rings
Replace all worn clips and shoddy wiring
Change spark plugs + wires, tested coils
Clean all engine grounds
Replace all engine gaskets (intake and exhaust)
Replace all vacuum + coolant lines
Replace thermostat and radiator caps
Replace fuel lines, and filter
Set TPS+CAS
Do everything with care. When you are done, your car will run a LOT better than before. You won't have to worry about ANYTHING! Woo hoo!
