ok I had the same exact problem while going through my 2nd gen woes
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=173885
pretty much to the T, notice that?
same had to give it a ton of gas, etc... etc...
anyway heres how I solved the sparatic idle right off the bat.
go where the tps is, and press the throttle with your finger, "note: make sure the engine is warm"
check to see if the throttle linkage is returning fully.
now press on the lever that connects with the tps to ensure it is returning fully.
need a pic?
here
press in the direction my finger is pointing.
did your idle come down at all?
if so chances are its the throttle cable, try loosening it up a bit and see if it helps, also spray some cleaner on this spring here
no help? or maybe it did help but didnt bring dow the idle enough?
try this screw here, go easy it will drop rpm's fast
still didnt help? or maybe it did, either way you might wanna adjust this screw here
when adjusting these screws, especially the one on the top of the manifold you will wanna follow the directions in your manual.
also dont forget to check the timming before and after adjustments, that will do it as well.
hope this helps, I just froze my *** off getting those pics.

Have you considered changing your O2 sensor? My friend had the same problem with his turbo MKIII supra ( which I must brag that I embarrased him multiple times on Silver Springs Bv) and I told him to change the O2 sensor and he did not listen to me because I had a "piece of crap mazda" as he said. Anyway he wound up paying a mechanic $150 to tell him the same thing I did.

I didnt correct the o2 issue until a week or so after I corrected the idle issue.

well, I started working on her once I got home from school. On the way this morning, it didn't seem like it was pulsing quite as badly as before. Then on the way home it wasn't pulsing at all, but it was idling kinda high at about 1150. So I let it warm up completely and once again set the tps. After I set the tps, it idled damn near perfect at about 800. I went ahead and took off the ic and checked all the throttle cables and cleaned everything really well just to be sure. So it idles well now but it seems to have a hard time starting when warm cuz it gets a lil flooded. I am not sure if that is from anything that I did or what. I'll see if it pulses again in the morning and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thank you all for your input, it is greatly appreciated.

I got the same problem on my TII.
It will pulse in 500 rpm intervals anywehre between 1200 and 3000 until the gas runs out. I checked an rechecked vacuum leaks. Adjusted and readjusted the tps. Replaced gaskets and hoses, and nothing helped. So this weekend I finally went in and removed the vacuum rack and replaced all the vacuum lines with silicon in hopes to fix the problem. I have not started it up yet cause I found out I had a fuel leak cause one of the injector orings was bad, so I'm waiting for parts to come in to fix that. I hope it works though. I'll post with my results.

I'm still working on my car, I am 99% sure I will have the problem's fully resolved in the next 2 days.
I have already made 110% progress on the car in the last week.

hey, my car is doing this too! Seems like a pretty common problem. It only started doing it. my TPS is adjusted PERFECTLY so that rules that out.
I'm going to mess with the idle though, because it's pretty high.
pulses between 1600 and 1900RPM, sometimes a little lower. sounds weird, eh? mmmMMMM ..... mmmMMM... mmmMMM... MMMMMm...MMMMM... etc... forever! augh
simetimes it goes away though, and sometimes its gets really bad ( like 1400-2200... wtf)
It'll also do it if I just try and bring the revs up a little...
and sometimes the car idles perfect... weird, eh?

And was being hard headed about replacing the TPS since its so damn expensive. Well to me it is.
Replaced it and runs perfect.

I had idle problems with my 86 RX and when I replaced the vacuum switch whichs regulates the idle my problem went away imediately. It controls the vacuum when the car warms up. It is defintley an over looked problem on the RX. The vacuum switch is located (as you look at your motor from the front) in the back left hand side of the engine. It will have three vacuum hoses going to it. This vacuum switch regulates the cacuum pressure in both cold and warm conditions. I was also told to exchange my TPS which had no effect on my problem. Good Luck!

Yes, and mine does the same thing. It's a 90 vert, automatic. Only occurs in drive. Idle pulses from 1200 to 1800. In drive idles smooth at 750. Does the same warm or cold. Starts out at 2000 rpm. for about 15 seconds then starts pulsing. Have checked for vaccum leak and adjusted tps. Have not removed BAC to clean yet but BAC is functioning per the test in the FSM. Seems that no one knows how to fix this in this forum. With so many people having the problem there has to be some answers.
Any help is appreciated.

Long story But well worth reading! My 1990 convert NA was running great for two years...but then stopped idling down to 850 rpm and got stuck at 1500 ...I tapped on the thermo wax valve on the TB and it dropped to 850. So I ordered a new one ..problem solved right? ..Wrong ..I changed the vaccum hoses and the thermo wax valve and the Idle Started pulsing between 1200 and 1600 rpm and the A/F ratio bounced as well on my AEM gauge from 13 to past 18 :1. This Pulsing thing happened many times before for very short periods of time ..most of the time I kicked the A/C On and off and it would go away. I thought ,,bad new wax valve ..I will switch back to my old one ...no Change ...then I was told adjust TPS , check Vaccum Leaks. but nothing helped. then I read about the Bypass Air Valve (BAC valve) and it's functions and how it Pulses! ..this led me to try and uplug it but it was too hard to reach so I just plugged the air intake with a inner plug and put the old hose back on over it.
Immediately the car idled Down smooth to 850 rpms. I am told this will affect cold start up but I live in Florida so this should not be a big problem ...hope this helps ..By the way you can clean out the BAC valve before replacing it and it may save you a few hundred dollars. that is what i plan to do if the cold start up is a problem.
