RX7 1988 Alarm System

Hello everyone, I just recently obtained an RX7 1988 and decided to join this board. There seems to be a few problems with the car but i have one major issue, the alarm System. During the entire day the car was fine nothing really disturbing about it, but at 4A.M. for no apparant reason the car alarm went off. That wasn't the worst part, the car was parked 5 blocks from me at my friends house in his driveway. The Alarm was on for about an hour, on and off. When I did get to the car the alarm was not on, but just when I turned my back it went off. I tried to turn the caron and look for the alarm button but nothing. Finally the only thing to do was disconnect the battery and that finally did the trick. I'm wondering if there is an alarm button somewhere on the car to enable and disable the alarm. Thanx for everyones time to listen to my very long story, any help would be appreciated.

I drive an 87, and I rarly turn mine on, simply because if the alarm decides to go off it wont turn off untill I get to the car.

Assuming that the 87 and the 88 have the same alarm system, as far as I know there is not a button anywhere.

Inorder to turn on the alarm before you get out of the car you need to lock the doors from the inside. You should here a small beep noice, I cant remember if this comes when you close the last door or when you lock the last door.
After you get out you will still need to lock the driver side door with the Key.

if you dont want to set the alarm simply leave your driver door unlocked (from the inside) after you get out lock the door with your key and your car will be locked up, without the alarm

The alarm unit itself may be to blame.

I have one for sale that came out of my 1986 GXL.

I can sell it to you and provide instruction on how to replace it.

If you want to remove it completely and not have the factory alarm, all you have to do is remove the unit. That's all there is to it.

The 86 uses different pin layout than the 88.

If the alarm is triggering, most of the time it is related to dirty interior door switches. Clean the latch switches that you lock and unlock the car with from inside.

sometimes my 89 doesnt work right..and the triggers that turn on the lights when the door is open are the problem..they dont ground correctly..but as far as it going off randomly...its happened to me once...i just disconnected the ecu...and reconnected it...hasnt happened again..but resoldering always helps...dont know if this applies to the s4..cuz the alrm box is in a different spot..maybe just unplug it? its gonna be a short somewhere..in the box or in the door triggers?

or if you have the interior proxy sensors, leaving the windows down will make the alarm go off if the wind blows through.

That's assuming he has the AE- and was dumb enough to leave the windows down.
