rx-7's smell

hey sorry if i sound like an idiot, but I don't know much about anything when it comes to your cars.

I’ve noticed now on 2 occasions that the interior of the rex's smell like an blast of explosive diarrhea coated in oil was shot into the car. Why is this. DO the rotaries require so much oil that the smell penetrates to the interior?? Are all rex's like this?

its pretty unpleasent, what is the best way to be rid of it, without spraying mist of lotus

could be a hole somewhere in your exhaust system. Might want to check because it could be leaking carbon monoxide in there.

Funny you mention that "smell". I'm on my third Rx-7 and they all have this certain "smell". Kinda hard to describe but its definatly an exhuast/motor kinda smell, tell you the truth I kinda like it, reminds me that its a sports car and a machine. It goes good with the Apexi N1 note.

its not my car, mine smells like fine leather.

hmmm i dont think it is the exaust but that is a possiblitity. It alwayse smells, not just when the car is running. BUt i have noticed in one of my freinds rex's the heat comming out of where his gear box is, feels almost like its a heater on full blast. ??

the smell kind of resembles a boat engine. Not desiel, but, if you know how on large boats the whole engine room reaks of oil. Its kind of like that.

I don't know why you have exhaust on the inside... that's not usually desired... however, i like the fact that my car smells like a boat with diarrhea. In fact, spend enough time cleaning snow behind your car, and you get high for a good 20 minutes or so.

thats burning gear oil, sounds to me. My sister had a Saab 99 and it burned gear oil like it was gas or something. Smelled exactly as you describe it. Tell him to check the oil level at the shift ball, it might be pretty dry in there and the heat of the tranny without enough oil to keep the ball cool and wet could be causing the little oil that is in there to burn. This would smell aweful and the smell will penetrate everything, and would surely still linger even after teh car is off. Actually the smell will never go away if it is burning gear oil. Also have him check the levels inside the tranny and check for a slow leak at any seals. Hope that helps

Dude, I know the burnt clutch smell, it's almost identicle to the burnt brake smell. And It doesn't smell anything like what he described. I mean a burnt clutch almost smells like a burn-out, but not as strong and it won't give you as bad a headache Gear oil, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Speaking of bad smells, how do you get them out of your car?

In the future, I will pull the seats and interior. But someone before my ownership smoked in it, the exhaust is gone and got into the upholstry, and all that fun stuff....

Okay, you ready for this......

That smell is the shifter bushings and boots.

Same reason that there is exhaust smell.

The fix casts $100 roughly.
Takes 20 minutes to fix.

I was thinking the same thing.

BTW: any exhaust smell in the car is very very bad, and you should not drive the car until the problem is fixed

OK, so you guys who say it's the boot.......what would make the boot smell like death? It's the middle rubber boots your talking about right? Why would the rubber just start to smell in some cars? Please explain a little for me.

The rubber is dissolving.

The caustic reaction is probably due to a leak in the cat (albeit a small one)

the chemicals and unburnt fuel, is eroding the boots from the indise out.

Also, hove you ever see that batting that is in there to cut noise?
it cuts noise well, and also if it is contaminated, smells like its "cutting" somthing ELSE.

Replace the boots. let the batting sit in full sun for a day.

Find the (possible) exhaust leak.

And you'll be back in business.

And yes, dissolving rubber STINKS!

You might want to febreeze your car after.
This smell lingers in the upholstry.

Right, that's what I thought you were getting at. I just couldn't see the rubber spontainiusly disolving like that, but yeah an exhaust leak with our rich exhaust would prolly do it....makes 'scents' to me

Okay... now that helps NOTHING....

If your gonna stink up the place with puns, then this fix will do NOTHING for your odor problem.

dude, I wasn't just taking up space with a pun, OK?!?!? I don't have an odor problem and neither does my car. I was following up on my previous reply which was a question about why the boot would smell bad.....you answered my question and I was putting closure to my question, so that the next person to come along would know that a reply to that specific question would not be required. And I really didn't think that being a little light hearted about it would hurt.
Later bro.
