RX-7 Speakers?

I would like to know what the best speaker comb would be for my RX-7. I want to put subs in the cargo bins or behind the seats. The thing about putting them behind the seats is that would the speakers have enough room without hitting something. I have about 9" behide my seat becuase I'm not that tall. I want something that sounds clean without a huge box in the hatch.

Really it comes down to what size sub should I get and where should I put it?

!!!!Thanks for reading!!!!

I have a 8" JBL sub, and it fills in quite well- Mine is mounted inside the bin area, facing down. It still has enough power to vibrate my innards some if i crank the volume up, yet sounds clean all the time!

This is the sub I have: LINK LINK 2 The magnet structure is HUGE for such a small sub. Also, a small sealed box works quite well with one of these, so long as its about 7-8" deep (so the sub can fit).

As far as the rest of the speakers- go for some component Alpine's or anything that sounds good to you.

i have some pioneer shallow mounts, they are pricey but hit very well and have a mounting depth of only 3 1/2" kinda hard to find a box though may have to build one or have one made for you, i have the 12" but i think they come in 8" and 10" too, great subs

This subject has been covered countless times. You may wish to use the search function found at the top right hand corner of the forum.

The stock location speaker sizes are found in the FAQ for FC sticky thread found at the top of this (the 2nd gen RX-7 technical) section.

As far as subs, probably the worst place in the vehicle to place then is in the Bin area behind the seats. The biggest problem is the structure of the car there, and the ceiling which just happens to be the perfect length away to create a wonderful canceling effect to any sort of sub frequencies. Toss in the B/C pillar harmonics from bin mounted subs and sound quality drops even further.

Yes, I know there will be plenty of members that say that they have put subs in the bins and it sounds great to them... but no matter what, that location is a poor location and it will never sound as good as properlly placing a sub (or sub woofers) in the correct position in th car, and it will always take much more power to produce even marginally good bass using the bin area.

The ideal area is located BEHIND the strut towers. Either in the spare tire area, or in small enclosures created behind the strut towers. In these locations a single 8 inch woofer in the proper enclosure will make as much bass (and deeper freqs) as a couple of 10" woofers located in the bin area.

But using the Bin area will always be a compromise on sound quality and quantity.

Now before some of the youngsters start barking how they got good bass in the Bins, My comments come someone who was in the car audio biz for over 17 years, with countless wins and cars competing for sound quality since the 80's, as well as a judge for the former CAN and IASCA car audio sanctioning bodies. I have played with FC's making bass and award winning systems since 1986. Systems in FCs that won awards with as little as 100 watts RMS to systems with close to 2000 watts RMS (not any of the peak power at 14.4 volts crap)

As far as behind the seats, unfortunately you will not have enough distance to properly build the sub freqs there. Sure you may get a little rattle, but you will not get any reasonable sub freqs simply due to the lack of distance.

Well said Icemark. I decided to compromise audio quality for other factors, such as weight balance, as well as a stock look. Mind you my car has no storage bins.

I am no audio expert, but I know that what I have is not award winning, but more than enough for my needs.
