Mazda has never come out explicitly to state what it stood for, but the two most popular theories are:
Rotary Experimental - 7
Rotary Export - 7
I prefer the former, as the vehicle was designed for home-grown consumption in Japan.

Remember, the names given to cars are dreamed up by the marketing department. They don’t necessarily have to mean anything or be accurate, they just have to sound good and stick in your mind! It’s quite probable the Rotary eXperimental tag was used by Mazda during the rotary engine’s development, and later picked up by the marketing guys because they liked the sound of it. But since Mazda had been selling rotary powered cars for several years before they first adopted it for the RX-2, the rotary was hardly “experimental” any more!
