RX-7 FC3S Models

I'm lover of this car, and it is my dream car. But problem is, I don't know which one to buy. I know there were many models of it, such as GX, or GXL , something along that line. Can someone give me a brief describtion of all the model of the last line of second generation RX-7 and does it apply world-wide? For eg. is the model X in Japan the same as the model X in U.S. or Canada? Some answers would be greatly appreciated it. And what year and which model was the fc3s in Initial D? I know it is something like efini iii, does it have anything to do with gx or gxl?

sorry, i'm new to the forum, so if i'm not mistaken,
efini iii refers to the turbo version of rx-7, and there is no other model that has turbo right?

Efini was the brand that the 3rd gen RX-7 was sold under in Japan.

No, the Savanna was the the brand/marketing name for the 1st and 2nd gen RX-7s.

Perhaps it is a typo for the Infini which was a skunkworks version of the FC in Japan.

There was an Infini I through IV.

I did a little history search of all the second gen rx-7 on the net, and the results weren't really that great. I see all thes gtx model and such, and gtr, which i really don't understand. what's the model difference between the one with the circle lights and the ones without it? are they just basically the saem? and i'm sure many have seen this RX-7 ‡III, and that was from a fc3s sight, i'm just all confused with the names, savanna, and efini and such. i know it gets tedious for some people to explain all this crap again and again, but seems like i can't find anything, and i realli want to know about the history of rx-7. thanks in advance for the replies. and i seen some where on this site of mention of s4 or s5? what's it suppose to mean?

s4 is 86-88 rx-7's with the rectangle tail lights, and s5 is 89-91 rx-7-s with the round taillights.

if you get one, get a TII, GXL, GTU, or GTUs. those are the top end models for 2nd gens.

There are only 3 basic models of the 2Gen RX-7 in North America: Non-Turbo (FC331), TurboII (FC332), and Convertible (FC351). Other than that, they are grouped in to Series 4 and Series 5, which has been explained in the previous post. My recommendation is to just be aware of the basic options, and simply buy whichever car you can find at a good price. Also note that these cars have been around for a while, so there is no telling what modifications and additions/subtractions have been done to the car vs. its stock configuration. Don't stress over the names, especially since you cannot get any of those Japanese models in North America unless you go through a LOT of trouble.

The one thing that I can tell you is to not buy a 2Gen RX-7 with an automatic transmission unless you REALLY want the automatic transmission. This is because the automatic transmission is very expensive to repair and/or replace.

This thread answers a lot of your questions:

The "best" model is a matter of opinion. I'm going to argue with you and say that the Sport (GS in Canada) is the best non-turbo RX-7, followed by the 88 GTU, and then the GTUs. Again, that's just an opinion. Some people like the convertible (one of the best convertibles ever made), some like the GXL, and some even like the lightweight base models. There's something for everyone.

BTW, the GTU was the base model 1989-on.
