Runs but won't start now
I have a 1986 RX-7 with 156000 miles. I drove it almost everyday last fall up to Christmas. Started every morning even on the coldest of days. (5 Degrees). I started it on a cold night and moved it from my drive to the street. Warm up time was only 1.5 to 2.0 minutes. I then shut it off. I have not been able to start it since. I have replaced the plugs and wires. I have both spark and fuel. If I crank it for 10 to 15 seconds I get a fuel smell. I don't think I am flooding out initially. Any thoughts??
Thanks for any help.

If all else fails, tow it to start it. Otherwise, do the unflooding procedure. Unlike boingers, a flooded rotary stays flooded no matter how long it sits. The excess fuel has 'washed' all the oil out of the chambers and you have zilch compression
Try the unflooding procedure. Kevin's is as good as any you'll find:

I think it's under 'TECH.'

Thanks for the help. I have some very nice days coming up and will try the unflood technique. If that fails, I will move on with the push start, or drag the car until she starts method.

Cuz yer new. As your post count grows, that 'title' will change. When you hit 1000 posts, you can finally change it to whatever you want.
Hint: posts made in the Lounge don't count towards the 1000.

Its great to be new! I have 2 - 7's. one white and one blue. The drivers seat in both have torn fabric along the side of the seat next to the door. What is a good place on the web to get seat covers for the RX-7

I had a similar problem, the afm (the metal box attached to the air cleaner) flapper was corroded which kept it in the closed position. It needs to swing freely as more air is drawn into the intake. If it is closed the fuel pump shuts down. First check the connector that plugs into the afm and make sure it hasn't become disconnected.

Actually, you don't have to pull the fuse out. Just crank it with the pedal all the way depressed to flush the fuel out of the combustion chamber. Pressing the pedal all the way down actually cuts off the fuel supply. Do it for 10seconds. then stop for 10seconds to let the starter cool down, and then crank it again for 10secs with accelerator depressed all the way. Then get off the accelerator pedal and start it normally. If it doesn't work, do the cycle over again. NEVER shut your rotary car while it is in the "cold start cycle".

I had a similar problem as RotoryRex7 did, but with my 88 TII. What happened to me was the plastic intake piece by my turbo cracked which caused the plastic intake piece to come off and no open up the flap. That in turned caused me to have a no run condition. Check your intake all around when you get a chance.

Thank you for all your help. A special thanks to Rxmfn7, I was able to start the car after about 6 cycles of your procedure. It was a great joy to hear the engine come to life. Again, Thank You!!
