rpm's shooting up but speed is still slow

rpm's shooting up but speed is still slow

i have this problem, i have an 88 gxl and i have been having this problem where as i am accelerating my car bogs down like it has no power and my rpms shoot up nlike normal but the cars speed doesnt increase then like nothing has even happened it snaps out of it and starts to accelerate like it should. this really sux when im racing an old crusty prelude that i know i could smoke a million times over and it happens and he wins!!!! ARGH any comments has anyone heard of this?

if your rpms are shooting up and your car's not going anywhere...then i would say your clutch is goners.

edit: oh wait a sec, snaps out of it? do you have an auto?

Bad clutch, or bad auto tranny... you didn't say if it was a manual or auto

hey

its a manual i kinda figured that that was it . i dont think the pressure plate has enough in left in it to keep a good grip on the flywheel at hard acceleration

You would definately know if you had traction problems. I don't think that is what it is. I vote clutch.
