Is the rotor gone?

OK. New around here, so I'll do the best that I can. I bought two rx-7s, 86 base and 88GTU. The 86 runs and revs fine in neutral, but rev it in gear and revs really slow. I also got spark plugs and changed them all which lead me to something interesting. I found oil on the 2 rear plugs, but the front two had none, actually it looked like rust was starting to form. Does this mean the front rotor is gone? It smells like it running rich, backfires off and on, and i put in 5th, let the clutch out and it felt like i was driving a tank. If it is, guess my project car is going to have to wait.

Do a compression test???

By "oil" do you mean WET with oil?
Are you sure it's not fuel?
If it's oil, the oil control o-rings are goners - you need to rebuild to "fix" this problem.

Need to get a compression tester, which would be the best way to find out. The front plugs have normal carbon scoring, but the rear ones do have fuel and oil mix on them. Smells like fuel, but has oil on the plug face, not on the threads. Also, it idles irraticly; from the normal 750 all the way to 2k. I know about the 3k warm up, but doesn't idle that high.

Check compression first, then the ignition system. Maybe you aren't getting spark to a rotor.

Thanks Aaron Cake. I found out the front rotor is fine, but the rear rotor's apex seals are gone. Guess I'll have to start saving.
