Rotary noob

hey there my name is shaun and im just joining these forums to gain some information about the fc rx7... I know the basics about rotary engines; how they work and all, but i dont really know how to go about modifying one. Ive mainly had nissans in the past (2 x turbo silvias) one of which im currently selling and now ive decided to get an FC for my next car...

so anyway my question, how would i go about modifying a series 4 rx7, assuming that it is unmodified? Ive heard its not like with nissans (ie just bang on the mods and nothing breaks) with the rotar needing retuning after every modification...

so basically does it just go like

filter
exhaust
t4 turbo
injectors
ecu + tune
bosch fuel pump

another question, how many injectors does it use? I know a 4 cyl needs 4 injectors, a 6 needs 6 injectors etc... but how many does a rotary need?

also can some one explain what they mean by 'porting', i hear things like bridge port, street port etc but i dont know what that means exactly...

are there any other things other than those that i listed? what sort of power should i expect from that combination? what would be the safe boost level would to run??

car will be used for street and maybe occasional drag... i would be satisfied with mid 12 sec passes..

also how long would this last exactly before requiring a rebuild of the engine?

There's nothing drastically different from a Nissan in a rotary. All of the same basic rules apply. Intake, exhaust, fuel, turbo, porting, etc... all the same principals. With the basic mods, retuning is NOT neccesary. Obviously, with ANY car, major mods require major tuning. Nissans are not exempt to this rule.

filter
exhaust
t4 turbo
injectors
ecu + tune
bosch fuel pump
Well, yes and no. I think you might need to research your mods more carefully.

K&N Cone, or some other type of free-breathing air filter is always a good first choice, no matter what your goal.

Exhaust is always a good choice as well.

t4 turbo might be a bit too specific.. Use the search button... I also don't know enough about turbo'd cars to give any turbo specific advice.

Injectors/Fuel Pump (Not neccesarily a bosch... maybe walbro.. research it)... definately at the same time as the turbo... maybe a rebuild and some porting at the same time as well... but thats $$..

ECU+Tune.. sure.. why not. You'll probably need it after the injectors, fuel, turbo to manage all of that fuel.
another question, how many injectors does it use? I know a 4 cyl needs 4 injectors, a 6 needs 6 injectors etc... but how many does a rotary need?
4. Two per housing. Primaries fire all the time, secondaries open up at higher RPMs (typically).
also can some one explain what they mean by 'porting', i hear things like bridge port, street port etc but i dont know what that means exactly...
Means the same thing it would on a piston engine... just with different names.

Porting is just opening the intake ports in the rotor housings/side plates by grinding them bigger with a die grinder.... thats the simple way to describe it. "bridge porting" or "street porting" is just a name for the size and shape of the modified port.

are there any other things other than those that i listed? what sort of power should i expect from that combination? what would be the safe boost level would to run??
That is a loaded question. Depends. I know thats not the answer you are looking for, but... I feel its accurate. Hehe.

car will be used for street and maybe occasional drag... i would be satisfied with mid 12 sec passes..
You shouldn't concern yourself with what the car is going to be, but what the car IS... You need to drive it, bond with it, and enjoy it. After you do that, start doing research.. lots of it.. months of it... then spend your money WISELY.

In fact, you might want to do the research before you buy the car. Make sure you don't waste your money on a lemon.

also how long would this last exactly before requiring a rebuild of the engine?
Well, depends on the quality of the car/engine you buy. If you get one thats freshly rebuilt, it could have many happy miles on it. If you buy one thats old and near death... not so long.

Hope that helps.... I'm no where near the smartest guy on here.. You may have more luck posting during the day in the US.... Lots of insanely smart people on here... but they aren't awake at messed up hours like I am....

Good luck.
