im pretty sure you can fit (comfortably) a 225's on a 7" rim, but any bigger would probably just not fit right..

I run 225's on my 16x7's and 38mm offset with fairly lowered suspension and it all fits fine.

Yah that's fine, 205 works on a 7" rim, 225 is just about the max you can fit before it starts to be messed up.

225/50/15 on the stock 1990 gxl rims: 15x6. i'm thinking about getting the BF goodrich KD's. they seem to be a good deal... plus i can get them at costco, so price isn't so bad, $150 each, mounted and balanced.

I have 245/50 on factory 16's for the strip, 225's for the track.

225 just seems like a bit too much for 6" wide rims, for the street at least.

Yeah, 205s on stock 6" FC wheels is about it. You squeeze 225s on there and they start rolling over on the sidewall pretty easy.

ok, thanks. anyone know anything about the bfg's? i'd like to get azenis, but i'm going to wait for those till after i get rims... i'm going all out with some volk TE37s, probably 16x7 as well. i'm going to save up for those as the bfgs wear down, then put some azenis on those.

I agree, with a 225, the min wheel width really is 6.5 inches... you are probably starting to loose traction due to sidewall roll using a 225 on a 6 inch wheel.
