rethread holes for shifter?

I have a 87' manual. The previous ower must of been messing with the shifter cause when i took the shift boot off and looked under it i saw 2 bolts instead of 3 and no washers. All 3 holes are stripped out. Can these be re tapped to the next thread size. I dont want to have to buy a new trany. I was told the metal, aluminum?, is to soft to retap and i would need a new trany. Plan on putting a Mazdatrix short throw shifter since the cheapest one i could find. thanks

You might be able to fix it with a "PermaCoil" kit. It fixes the threads so you can use the original size bolt.

Or try talking to a Japanese bike shop, they usually have a similiar type thing.

We call it helicoils out here in California, not sure what it is there. IIRC, that's an M6x1.0 bolt for the shifter.

Get the appropriate helicoil kit, and follow the instructions. No problem using it in aluminum. I get mine at the local hardware store. The kits are kinda pricey (~20 bucks)
