Replacing the Tranny should I (t2 or N/A)
I am putting all the turbo parts back on the Vert when it gets a little warmer. I have a T2 tranny laying around and several N/A trannies. Since the car will be boosted again I though this would be a good oppurtunity to throw in a T2 tranny.. I would just drill the t2 driveshaft to get it to fit the N/A open diff.
Anyone changed out the syncros on the T2 tranny themselves? I was thinking of getting new sycs before instaling it.. Any thoughts or any ideas of cost to replace them?

if you do the syncros you might as well do the bearing and seals too
and as far as drilling out the shaft, well thats just a little to ghetto for me, but i suppose it will bolt on... however the chances of it being balanced and true @80MPH is another story and will probably rip off and fall out on the freeway and cause a 100 car pileup and numerous fatalities... but go for it

Hey, rather then starting my own thread (I searched for a little bit), I'll ask my tranny rebuild questions here.
Firstly, I know my transmission needs a rebuild. It's next to impossible to get the car in first if it's moving. As soon as I slow down and I'm almost at a dead stop I can put it in first, otherwise it doesn't want to go. Sometimes I can throw it in first anyway with a lot of force but usually, I just have to use second gear at low speeds or slow down enough to get in first. Reverse does the same thing. Sometime it won't go in gear (not while moving though, just sitting at a dead stop.)
And, just the other day my second gear started slipping B-A-D. I put the car in "second" the other day and I felt it "miss." Like I could tell the transmission didn't catch. Sure enough, I was in neutral. It's been doing this ever since. Not all the time, but most of the time.
So my question is, could I rebuild my transmission on my own? (a fun weekend project?) or should I take the car to a tranny shop? Where would I get parts? Bearings / syncros / etc. and then of course I would need instructions since I've never worked on any transmission before.
Thanks,

I had the bearings, synchros and seals done for my NA transmission and they charged me $600 plus parts (about $80), at Eagle Transmission - was kinda cool though, they painted it for free before they gave it back to me. Even though the paintjob sucked, it's the thought that counts.

You are awesome, sir.
I will definetly take the 87 tranny. I have a manual transmission. But I have an N/A. What kind of tranny is it? Turbo or N/A?
My current transmission has 202,000 miles on it. *eesh* 140,000 would be a MAJOR improvement, I'm sure.
Now I just need to find the time to come get it.
Thank You!!

I found this: http://www.mazdatrix.com/g1.htm at MazdaTrix.
It doesn't sound very easy, rebuilding the tranny on your own. And MazdaTrix won't even sell internal transmission parts anymore.

Unfortunately the syncros didn't come in the kit and I had to buy them from Mazda, but again, they weren't terribly expensive - like $10ish a piece and there are 5 - something like that.
I'd be interested in finding this place you used. I live near Dallas.

To RRTEC, I would just get all the T2 drivetrain conversion stuff, its not all that much mor expensive than the $250 for the conversion shaft.

And that kit is really expensive.
Would someone with more experience care to comment on whether or not this kit would actually work for ANY 81-92 transmission?

Eagle Transmission in Lewisville were the ones that sent me there to get parts - you could probably give Steve there a ring and ask where you can buy a seal kit and he'll tell you the name of the place. He seems like a good guy, most of the time.
