Talking Replacing the Tranny should I (t2 or N/A)

I am putting all the turbo parts back on the Vert when it gets a little warmer. I have a T2 tranny laying around and several N/A trannies. Since the car will be boosted again I though this would be a good oppurtunity to throw in a T2 tranny.. I would just drill the t2 driveshaft to get it to fit the N/A open diff.

Anyone changed out the syncros on the T2 tranny themselves? I was thinking of getting new sycs before instaling it.. Any thoughts or any ideas of cost to replace them?

if you do the syncros you might as well do the bearing and seals too

and as far as drilling out the shaft, well thats just a little to ghetto for me, but i suppose it will bolt on... however the chances of it being balanced and true @80MPH is another story and will probably rip off and fall out on the freeway and cause a 100 car pileup and numerous fatalities... but go for it

Well i took one I used to have to work with me when I worked at a machine shop and it worked very well... i might spend the $250 to buy the conversion shaft from Racing Beat....

Hey, rather then starting my own thread (I searched for a little bit), I'll ask my tranny rebuild questions here.

Firstly, I know my transmission needs a rebuild. It's next to impossible to get the car in first if it's moving. As soon as I slow down and I'm almost at a dead stop I can put it in first, otherwise it doesn't want to go. Sometimes I can throw it in first anyway with a lot of force but usually, I just have to use second gear at low speeds or slow down enough to get in first. Reverse does the same thing. Sometime it won't go in gear (not while moving though, just sitting at a dead stop.)

And, just the other day my second gear started slipping B-A-D. I put the car in "second" the other day and I felt it "miss." Like I could tell the transmission didn't catch. Sure enough, I was in neutral. It's been doing this ever since. Not all the time, but most of the time.

So my question is, could I rebuild my transmission on my own? (a fun weekend project?) or should I take the car to a tranny shop? Where would I get parts? Bearings / syncros / etc. and then of course I would need instructions since I've never worked on any transmission before.

Thanks,
iSP33D-for-J3SUS

I had the bearings, synchros and seals done for my NA transmission and they charged me $600 plus parts (about $80), at Eagle Transmission - was kinda cool though, they painted it for free before they gave it back to me. Even though the paintjob sucked, it's the thought that counts.

I may have a spare for you, i'm getting a low mileage 88 tranny for free and i can give you my old 87 tranny for free. 140k, it isn't BAD by any means, though it does sound like you have an auto the way you talk, if it is an auto i'm getting a low mileage 1990 GXL for dirt cheap soon and swapping it, you can have that auto tranny for free if you want.

I've just got to say, that's awesome - you can't beat a free transmission.

*looks for fine print* Did you really just offer me a free tranny??!?

You are awesome, sir.

I will definetly take the 87 tranny. I have a manual transmission. But I have an N/A. What kind of tranny is it? Turbo or N/A?

My current transmission has 202,000 miles on it. *eesh* 140,000 would be a MAJOR improvement, I'm sure.

Now I just need to find the time to come get it.

Thank You!!

Cheers,

I found this: http://www.mazdatrix.com/g1.htm at MazdaTrix.

It doesn't sound very easy, rebuilding the tranny on your own. And MazdaTrix won't even sell internal transmission parts anymore.

You can order the parts straight from Mazda for not too much money - the problem that I ran into was that it looked like it took special tools to get it all apart.

The bearing and seal kit I picked up from a transmission parts store in South Dallas somewhere - it was a good sized shop, but still was somebody's name, like Murray's or Mike's or something. It's apparently the same kit used in the same year B2200 pickup. Unfortunately the syncros didn't come in the kit and I had to buy them from Mazda, but again, they weren't terribly expensive - like $10ish a piece and there are 5 - something like that.

It wasn't COOKSON'S transmission was it? Right off I-20?

I'd be interested in finding this place you used. I live near Dallas.

If you can rebuild a motor...a tranny can't be much harder.

Has anyone ever rebuilt a tranny and posted a writeup?

From my experience and what I've read on here 1st gear is supposed to be hard to shift into while moving unless your going around 5 mph or less. The reverse not working while at a dead stop is deffinatley a problem though.

Yep, I'm pretty sure 1st doesn't have a synchro, so you must double clutch in order to downshift into it. If you do it correctly, it should slide in with ease.

To RRTEC, I would just get all the T2 drivetrain conversion stuff, its not all that much mor expensive than the $250 for the conversion shaft.

I am a newbie here but that kit scares me a little bit. How can they say that kit works for ANY 81-92 transmission?! TII trannys are different than N/A trannys.

And that kit is really expensive.

Would someone with more experience care to comment on whether or not this kit would actually work for ANY 81-92 transmission?

I can't remember the name, but I can guide you to the general area - if you're headed south on 35e at the American Airlines Center exit, and you take the exit immediately before the Woodall Rogers, and stay right for about 5 miles, it's up a tiny little sidestreet on the right. Good sized warehouse looking thing.

Eagle Transmission in Lewisville were the ones that sent me there to get parts - you could probably give Steve there a ring and ask where you can buy a seal kit and he'll tell you the name of the place. He seems like a good guy, most of the time.
