replacing stock stereo and speakers. Where're the amps?
I'm thinking about replacing the stock stereo and the stock speakers in my 88 vert.
Two questions for you all:
1) Where are the stock amps located for the front and door speakers?
2) Where do the headrest speakers get their signal from? I believe their amps are under the driver's seat, but I don't know how Mazda sends the signal to them. Is it something an aftermarket stereo headunit can't do?????
Thanks,
Kevin

I just got the following installed in my 89 vert:
Sony CDX-M770 Head unit
MBQuart 6.5" Coax (door)
MBQuart 4" Coax (under dash)
Phoenix Gold XS6600 6 channel amp
Rockford Fosgate 10" HE2 sub
The front four speakers each use one channel of the amp and the sub is using the other two channels bridged. The headrest speakers use the head rest amp and the head rest speaker controls. Everything works just as it did with the stock system.
If 88 is the same as 89, the front amp is behind the passenger dash and the head rest amp is behind the driver's seat - take off the spare tire cover and look behind the driver's seat and you should see it. The head rest speaker amp accepts a speaker level signal (not preamp/line level) - I think many people have had difficulty getting the head rest speakers to work because they (logically) assumed the head rest amp required a preamp signal.

Thanks NJDave!
That'll help out a lot. One last question though. Where are the headrest speakers getting their speaker level signal from? (Ok, and one more question) are the other stock speaker amps the same way?
