replacing shifting rubbers

Just bought some new factory rubbers for the shifter and was wondering how get them over the shifter? Shifter belongs to an S4 87 TII

advice anyone?

Take the shifter off? Just turn it real hard to the left and it will start to twist.

the shifter has been removed from the transmission... the problem is that the rubber that goes around it has a very small hole to fit the ball end of the shifter through it. So wondering if its supposed to slide right though (with proper lubricant or something) wow that sounds bad...
