Well, got the tranny out, along with the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing and pilot bearing seal, and the rear main seal. Tranny slid right out after we got it all unbolted, and the clutch cover bolts came out very easily, along with the clutch disc. It was just as I thought, the clutch disc was absolutely shot. The material was very worn down, and the flywheel and clutch cover were pretty glazed and smooth. After grabbing the 500 ft. lbs. impact gun and a 2 1/8th" socket, the flywheel nut came out very easily. Then to get the flywheel out I just grabbed the old Snap-On deadblow and pounded on it for a couple minutes while prying back with a prybar and the flywheel came out very easily. I managed to get very lucky with the pilot bearing too, turns out our shop teacher had the slide hammer style one and it only took me a couple minutes to get it out. I got the new pilot bearing in and greased it with some high temp wheel bearing grease and pounded it in with a 14MM socket, worked perfectly. I also started degreasing the bellhousing because it was full of grease and clutch material. I finally got all of my seals in today, so hopefully I can be finished up within the next two days on the tranny. Sucks that it cost me 50 bucks to machine the flywheel because they're much different than other flywheels. Hopefully I can get my pilot bearing seal, rear main seal, flywheel, clutch disc, and clutch cover installed tomorrow and have the front and rear tranny seals in and have the tranny ready for install on Wednesday. Just a quick question here. Did any of you guys replace the front transmission cover gasket? As in this one?

I got the front and rear tranny oil seals it looks like, which would be the two listed on this page as front and rear transmission seal.

Also, I think I figured out what that guy meant by needle bearing and rear dust seal. I believe he was talking about the pilot bearing and rear main seal, because those are the only bearings and seals on the back of the engine that have anything to do with the tranny. Any last things to add before I start putting things back together? Any other gaskets or parts I should be worried about?

No, I knew the disc was shot and that it was worn out. I thought the stock clutch wasn't going to hold up to what I wanted it to do. You took it the wrong way.

Btw, don't be an e-*******.

Well I just finished my clutch work this past saturday. I only replaced the disk, pressure-plate, throw-out bearing and tranny fluid. (e-bay special) It runs a lot better now. Ive found out that the only reason why I use to drive with "drop the clutch" habit was cause the clutch was so worn, I didnt feel much difference.

My tranny didn't come out or go in so easly though.

Good luck with the rest of your work.

Well, got my pilot bearing seal and rear main seal in the car today, went in very smoothly just like the pilot bearing did with a little high temp grease. Managed to get the front tranny seal in after finding out that it was hiding in the bearing cover. I even went as far as to try and get those 2 bearings out, thinking it was behind one of them. The rear tranny seal was easy after figuring out that the new Mazda OEM one is an upgraded version of the orignal one and that it looked quite a bit different. Clutch fork, bearing retainer, and new throwout bearing are all installed now too and greased and ready to go. Hopefully the bearing cover will not leak on me because I just re-used the stock gasket, but I don't think it's going to since there's no pressure to try and push the tranny fluid out passed the bearings. At least the bellhousing is now completely cleaned and degreased, so that's a plus. I also got the input shaft splines greased and the driveshaft greased too. My questions now. How do you go about draining the fluid and cleaning out the shift tower? That **** in there needs cleaned out and refilled pretty badly it looks like. So far so good, just taking it slowly to make sure I do things right. With luck tomorrow I can have everything re-installed and ready to go.

Got my cooling system put back together and my speed bleeder installed. I also go the flywheel back and put in, along with the clutch disc and pressure plate. Should have transmission re-installed along with the rest of the drivetrain tomorrow. Now another question. I figured out how to drain and fill the shift tower by removing the plate on the side. Here's the thing. I had a bunch of **** sitting in there that I cleaned out, but when I cleaned it out, I found a metal ring or something that was busted into a bunch of pieces, and I'm not sure what it was. Any idea?

I knew I forgot something, I dont think I greased anything.
Anyway on the drive home that weekend, I noticed some clanking noises comming from the tranny while cruising.
It still clanks a little to this day. And at first I also smelled "burning clutch" and figured that it was all apart of the "break-in."
Recently this past week Ive been smelling "burning clutch" though.

oh well.
How long should my clutch last?
