Replacing my clutch
Yea, I'm leaning more towards the Exedy OEM clutch kit now because it's cheap, and should hold up to what I wanna do with it until I do my turbo swap. Is Exedy the best brand to go with for a OEM clutch kit?
Exedy Stage 1 Organic
I went with the stage 1 organic about 6 moths ago. My master cylinder died about 2 months ago, replaced it and then the synchros in the tranny went about a month ago. The clutch peddle was really stiff, I wouldnt recommend this for a dying tranny(125k+). Just get a turbo tranny 150-350, clutch kit(probably about the same cost an na one), mazdatrix driveshaft288 and save yourself the trouble. I hated my na tranny even after I got the exedy in there, probably cause it was on its way out though. If you want I got an exedy organic stage one with about 10k on it I'll let go for 75 bucks+shipping. PP, throwout and all, paid like 350 for it.

If your clutch is all worn out, no matter what you replace it with...as long as it's in good shape and the right equipment, it will be much better than the worn out unit. I just replaced my clutch a couple weeks ago with a slightly used stock unit. The one in my car had 110k on it or more. When I took it out the disk had almost no grooves left in it. Now the unit I'm using is a huge improvement. Next time around I'll upgrade to an ACT or something else, but for now it's cool. So there's really no point in getting a clutch that can handle 200 pounds more torque than your car is making, right? You should get something capable of handling more power than your car has, but you don't need to go overboard. Just my $.02.
Yea, I'm going to just get an Exedy OEM clutch for my car so that it's not hard on other things in the car and will last me till I do my turbo swap. I'm sure it'll have enough grab to it since it's brand new too. Where can I get a good deal on one and will I need to resurface my flywheel?
You'll be happy with the Exedy unit. If the kit doesnt have the pilot bearing, just order one from Malloy Mazda in case your local parts store doesnt carry one. Adjust your clutch pedal when you install the new clutch. Theres no sense in spending more money than you have to. Especially when you're planning on swapping the parts out.
Alright, I'll pick up the pilot bearing if it doesn't come with one and I'll remember to adjust the clutch pedal. I think I'd rather just spend the 20 bucks and resurface the flywheel, especially if it means the clutch is going to last and better performance. And what do you mean by supernut?
Alright, going to order my Exedy OEM clutch today. Looks like it comes with all the tools I need to do it. Is there anything else I should be doing besides resurfacing the flywheel when I change my clutch like maybe draining and refilling the transmission fluid?
The "supernut" is the massive nut that holds the flywheel in place. If your replacing the rear main seal(DO IT!) you need to take the flywheel off anyways so why not resurface? Just get a huge socket and an impact wrench.
Alright, that's no problem. I've got the tools to remove that nut I'm sure, so I can do that. I'll replace the rear main seal and get the flywheel resurfaced along with draining and refilling the transmission fluid. Anything else?
I would replace the fluid in the transmission and the diff as long as all that crap is outta there. If you want to be really crazy I would replace the oil seals in there as well. The rear main seal is pretty easy. The stationary gear o-ring is kind of a bitch. The front tranny seal doesn't leak very often. I did it anyways. The rear one should be replaced, too. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

then you take those bolts out, slide it out, and you can replace the stationary gear o-ring

If you do decide to do the stationary gear o-ring, it might be hard to get it back in. I had to hit it with a rubber mallet many times from different angles to get it to slide back in since the engine has tension from the belts. As for the front and rear tranny seals, I just used a screwdriver to carefully pry them out. Or you could use a seal puller. Don't forget the pilot bearing seal.
So which of these seals do I actually NEED to replace while the parts are out? Do I absolutely need to replace those oils seals, front and rear transmission seals, pilot bearing seal, and the stationary gear o-ring? I know that I need to do the rear main seal for sure, and to replace the transmission and differential fluid for sure. The tranny mounts and sadle are easy to check for wear, and are there any cheap ways to strengthen them? Also, the clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and pilot bearing all need replaced at the same time, and they all come in the clutch kit I bought anwyays.
I would do the rear tranny seal for sure. The other ones might leak...they might not. It's up to you. I did all of those when I was in there. I figured it was less work than tearing it apart again later to do it. It's up to you.
I think I'll just do the rear seal then if it's really the only one that leaks. If the other ones aren't very prone to leaking, then I'll just pass on those. I'm only going to have this engine for another year or so, so I don't want to go too crazy with it. So is the rear main seal and the rear tranny seal the only ones that really need replaced then?

Well, I got my clutch kit in today, so now I need the other parts. What would you guys recommend for differential and transmission fluid? For the seals I plan to go with Mazda OEM ones. Any suggestions?

I believe the rear eccentric seal is what you are referring to. If you call mazdatrix they can tell you if that's the right part.

Well, started tearing things down today. I got the driveshaft out, along with the shift lever, starter, clutch slave cylinder, and tranny bolts. Just need to take out the crossmember and I can pull out the tranny tomorrow. Is there anything else I should replace other these parts?
