Replaced spark plugs, heard HORRIBLE noise!

I don't know what happened. I just replaced my spark plugs all with BUR9EQ on trailing and leading. I tightened them up [without a torque wrench], and then started up the car, and this abrasive squeeling noise was heard, so I immediately shut the car off. I have no idea to guage how tight to turn the plugs, so I losened them a bit, and then tried again. This time no noise.

What was that noise I heard, and how do I check to see if they are too tight or too loose? I don't have a torque wrench, so how can I guage the pressure? The instructions on the plugs say "turn 1/2 with gasket". So I tightened them until they got stiff, and then gave them a 1/2 turn of my wrench, and thought that was good. Any suggestions?

Damn that noise was bad. Would that have been the apex seals hitting the tips of the plugs????

Uh..I dont know for sure...but thats the only thing I can think of. I mean if all you changed were the spark plugs and the noise went away after you back em out some....well....I think you can figure out the rest

uh-oh. i sure hope it wasn't the apex seals hitting the plugs. i would pull the plugs and look at the ends.

You cant bottom out the spark plugs. You dont need to use a torque wrench to put on the spark plugs, make sure they are tight, but dont force them on. Its pretty hard to screw up changing the spark plugs. Make sure the boots are on tight.
