Its an 86 GXL, I'm trying to get it back and driveable. The last thing I have to do is fix that seal. So today I replaced it, but I can't get the driveshaft back into the tranny. It just won't go in all the way! I can't figure it out, it's really frustrating... it will clear the seal, but just won't sit into the gear housing as it should, preventing me from bolting the driveshaft back up to the differential. I see that on the shaft side of the mating gears there appears to be two "alignment" gaps in the teeth, but there are no corresponding gaps or such on the pinion gear on the tranny side... I can get it to slide halfway in, no more..... any tips? tricks? things that I am overlooking? Always appreciate the help guys!

like, is it just a matter of force, or am I missing some alignment procedure?

I hate bumping guys and I apologize beforehand, but I've got to get this thing outta the driveway before it gets towed! Anybody got an idea before I go to town with a mallet?

Wiggle while you push it? Make sure the Drive shaft has no flairs where it goes into the transmission?

yea no flares.... I guess I'm just being retarded while I'm hunkered under there as it should just slide right on in.... Oh well, I'll try to wiggle it better tomorrow.

What happend to the old seal? If you still have the old seal, check to see if the spring is still part of the seal. If there is no spring in there, its possible that that old spring is blocking the d/s from sliding on all the way. If you dont have the old seal anymore, carefully remove the new seal and using a flashlight, look in there to see if you can see the obstruction. Also, put some grease on the splines.

Awesome, the spring was not attached to the old seal, and i wasn't in a position to get a viewpoint into the housing so that just may be the case. Man I didn't think of that.... will update tomorrow morning, thanks a!
