replaced fuel pump - starvation issue worse now

so ever since I started driving the car I noticed with hard left hand turns the engine would cut out for a second or two, so I pulled the pump and found that the pump was rusty as hell and the sock was so clogged it imploded on it's self from the suction, so I threw in another (used) pump that was very clean that mu buddy had on the shelf, he couldn't remember if it came from a TII or N/A which kindof sucks.. but now I run out of fuel at 4000-5000rpm under load and the car totally cuts out taking gentile left turns..
the inside of the tank didn't look that good from when the car sat for years but I couldn't clean it out since I had more than half of a tank at the time.

the car is a S5 89 TII
the fuel filter was replaced just before I bought the car..

next time I have a chance, and an empty tank I will clean it out and throw in a walbro.. but I want to make sure there is nothing else that could be causing the problem.

sounds like the baffles around the pump pickup are rusted out causing the starvation when you turn. As for the 4k to 5k problem that is something else.

well I went for a drive today and had about 1/4 tank left, any slight left turn the engine would just shut off. And taking off from a stop I had to keep it under 20% throttle and under 3000rpm or it would do the same thing, then I had to pull over and let everyone pass then slowly work my way back upto the speed limit.. it was very annoying! so I went to a gas station and put about 3/4 of a tank of gas in and it drove fine with a slight hesitation sometimes at about 5000rpm..

tomorrow I will drain the gas and check the baffles.

now that I think about it, why it didn't happen as often with the old clogged pump is because once the fuel found it's way into the clogged sock it didn't leak out as easily and air probably had a hard time getting into it when I took the corner because of the bad baffles, probably giving me an extra few seconds for the pump to feed off the full sock before the fuel in the tank would return to level when I straightened the car out, and I probably had really crappy fuel pressure too.
