Removed PS...Quick Question...
I removed my PS about a month ago and I have to say I love the car without it. It feels so much better. However, every once in awhile the steering wheel will "lock up" (this only happens in parking lots under 10 mph) and it will not turn more than a little bit in the direction I want it to (this makes my turn radius in parking lots almost obnoxiously large). I figured out that when the car does this I can turn the wheel just a little bit in the opposite direction, and then back in the direction I want to turn, and it remedies the situation because the wheel will turn past the place it was just locked up at.
My question is: Is this normal? And, if not, what would fix it? My only thought was that maybe putting some PS fluid in the rack would help. Anyone know? Thanks.

NOT NORMAL...How did you go about getting all the fluid out? If you just turned the wheel side to side with the lines off the steering gear, then there still should be some in there, b/c "ideally" its not going to all come out. You do need some still left in there to lubricate the seals. Sounds like something with the rack n pinion is binding.... Have some one turn the wheel at a stop, look at the tie rods and look for anything abnormal. It didnt do this before I take it? Also, is the wheel locking, like how it feels when you've locked the wheel from turning it with the key not on the a/c position? It MIGHT be something with that too maybe...but would be very odd for it to right after you removed your p/s.

I drained it by turning the wheel side to side with the lines off the steering gear. No, it didn't do it before I took the PS out.
No, the wheel does not lock like it does with the key not at the on position. I couldn't think of any other word to use except for lock, that's why I used quotes around it.
Here is an example of what happens:
I am turning right in a parking lot, very smooth, everything feels great. Then, the steering wheel will reach the end of its turning radius and it will not turn anymore to the right, forcing my car to continue in a straight line. However, if I turn the wheel a slight bit to the left, then BACK to the right, the steering wheel will again turn right fine, and go past the point where it had previously locked up at. So basically, when this happens (every 1 out of 5 times or so) I will turn into the parking spot by turning the wheel to the right, a slight bit to the left, to the right again, again a slight bit to the left, and back to the right and it will pull in fine.
Hope that can help people diagnose the problem a little better. It's a really hard problem to explain...
