remove belts

What would happen if I just removed the AC and PS belts?

Would the computer be mad at me?

The AC wouldn't care but your steering would go to hell.

If you're not going to remove the systems altogether why remove the belts?

yeah, I guess if it ain't broke then don't mess with it. I miss the manual steering in my last car and i thought the last thing you wanted in a rotary was to drag it down with parasitic losses.

Basically it would be nice to feel it rev faster, but I should at least check the timing before I try venturing.

If the motor seems weak then you need to fix something, not see how you can add a tiny bit of power with changes.

I removed both the AC and PS systems altogether and I can guarantee you won't notice one iota of extra power or "faster" revving.

It does clean up the engine bay quite a bit and I too prefer the feel of manual steering, so it's not without benefits, just not the two you mentioned.

You can remove the belts for now if you want the manual steering feel (disclaimer below). When the P/S computer starts beeping under the steering column above your knees, unplug it. On S5's (which I don't recall you having), this may set off something else. You will also have a heavier steering feel than the manual rack, because the gear ratio is smaller. There is a write up in the archives I think on properly depowering the rack by removing seals hydraulic fluid. You'll still be stuck with the shorter gearing, although some may like the quicker steering, compared to the true manual rack.

If you just remove the PS belt then the steering will be MUCH heavier than if you did a proper de-powering of the rack, so don't take that as any indication of how it'll feel.
