Remove 6 Ports or Just Clean Them???
Hello all.
Well, I'm gonna be doing some work on my FC in a few weeks. It's going to consist of the ATF trick, new brake calipers, new brake pads, new brake lines, some body work, installing a new power antenna, installing a new moonroof, removing air pump and A/C stuff, installing my Mindtrain header and presilencer, and installing a RP50 cat back exhaust.
I figure while I'm at it I might as well do something with the 6 ports. They don't seem to work correctly, and I see quite a few posts about people removing them. I don't know if I want to remove them or just clean them. Which would you guys suggest?? Total removal or just the cleaning of them?? My car's an 86 base model.
Thanks,
Jeff

You can try tying them open, to get a general feel of what it would be like if you removed them. Removing them will give *SLIGHTLY* better results than just tying them open.. However, it does take a good bit of stuff out of the engine bay, and lightens the car up by a whopping 3 pounds or so..
Fixing them shouldn't be too hard either, but i'd be worried about backpressure with that exhaust.. Maybe think about one of the other methods of activation, such as the airpump.. Basically, you just pull them out, clean them up, clean up the holes in the block they slide in, oil it up, and put them back.. make sure the control rods line up, but that's pretty obvious when you get in there..
OTOH, with them tied open/removed, and since you have no cats, you could just remove the airpump. There's maybe 10 pounds, and a little engine loss gone.
You end up losing a bit of low end tying them open/removing them.. But, IMO, it's really no big deal.. So you can't take hills at 2000 rpm anymore... that's no big deal for me.
Another solution is the pineapple racing 6port sleeves.. someone can post the link to the site. They flow better than the stock ones...maybe better than none at all!
