Reman or Rebuilt

Im trying to decide where to get my new engine from. I am tempted to get a rebuild done at atkinsrotary, or rotary ressurection, but i love the fact that mazdas engines come with new housings and rotors. What have you guys had better experiences with?

J-Rat 03-14-07 01:51 PM

You could probably have your motor rebuilt with NEW housings for the price of a brand new Mazda motor. Also, you have other options for engine builders here in Arizona, such as AZRotaryRockets.

Red_Rabbit86 03-14-07 03:14 PM

i dont konw where your at in cali but if your north enough you could call up or go see pinnapple racing

Jager 03-14-07 03:20 PM

Get it rebuilt and then get a street port.

That's my humble opinion.

How good is AZRotaryRockets?

Rotary_Knight 03-14-07 03:34 PM

A reman is pricey but you know for sure it will perform, I know I have one!! but did not pay the mazda price :D

I've had an Atkins rebuild... and I loved the thing. Ran great. However, one good bet is to do it yourself... use the money you save on labor to buy new housings.

Get yourself a rebuild video. If you have tools, you can do it. Its really not THAT hard. It also opens up the option of porting, amongst other things.

They kick ass.

Glen does some seriously nice work. As for experience. He's been working on race cars with Paul Yaw so he knows building engines :D

Rat's running a motor built by him right now :D

Yeah, he built my motor. A street port that made 490 HP and 395 ftlbs of torque.

arghx 03-15-07 11:08 AM

man if you are in Cali you could go to Racing Beat or Mazdatrix depending on where you are... some of the best shops are in Cali. If you were mid atlantic on the east coast I'd say Bruce Turrentine or Kevin Landers

Red_Rabbit86 03-15-07 11:13 AM

hey i have a question. if i were to buy a s4t2 had it rebuilt how much stock hp would i have and then how much would i have if it was street ported?

micah 03-15-07 11:38 AM

Depends on how well you tune your car and who does the porting. Incorrectly porting an engine can actually hurt engine performance.

Red_Rabbit86 03-15-07 01:19 PM

well say i have a stock engine with only exhaust and i wanted to street port it. how much am i looking at. i think the problem with me i know what i want to shoot for i just dont konw how to get to my hp. i am really only looking at 300hp, i plan on drifting my car. as for the porting and interal engine/ head if you want to call it i was going to just drive down to pinnapple racing and have them do the work

Digi7ech 03-15-07 03:50 PM

Well, you neglected to mention your psi you'll be running as well.

9/10psi on stock turbo motor will be in the 170-190rwhp range.
Streetports are generally around a 10-20% increase depending on the porting done.

I do not think you would hit the 300 mark reliably.
You should look into a BNR hybrid turbo along with a streetport if you want to hit that number safely without making the motor work too hard.

How much for a reman?
The last time I checked at the Dealership, it was "cheap" and no core required. Atleast that's what I was told by the 'manager'. I even repeated myself and emphasized it. I believe it was a quote for $1200 about a year ago. Not sure if it was accurate. Can someone post up an accurate quote?

Thanks.

Are you serious? I just said IT DEPENDS

Well, your name has 86 in the title, and your profile says "FC". So I'm going to just assume its an NA. 300hp is WAY unrealistic.

i plan on drifting my car
Dear god....

Smartest thing you've said so far.

johnnyg1234 03-15-07 06:15 PM

I checked about a year ago on a reman, and I was told around $4500 by my local mazda dealer...

TehMonkay 03-15-07 11:31 PM

It depends on what computer you have, as far as what i can tell you, Chris Ludwig has tuned S4 TIIs for about 8 PSI of boost on a ported reman engine and gotten around 240HP at the wheels. He was using a haltech though. It was also on a first gen with a T2 tranny. Most FCs are in that ballpark though.

I still have to ask what is wrong with drifting, here they are having events at the sportsdrome in indiana and many people are interested in going, it's something to have fun doing.

wow thanks for being an asshole

supmahbruddah 03-16-07 12:10 AM

seriously man... do 240 owners all look down on those that want/do drift? its their car and they can do whatever they want. personally i want to track mine but do a little drift on the side (for fun and learning better car control of course)

I think you might be on the wrong forum dude.

TweakGames 03-16-07 12:38 AM

once, when I was crossing a street I saw a kitty cat. It was white and had some smaller black dots on its face. I called it spots.
