Reliability of 2nd Gen
Hey everyone, im pretty new here, i come here from protegeclub.com i currently drive a 2002 protege5 from mazda, with a 5speed of course.
so moving on, im currently shopping for a car to drive for the next year, as my father is taking my car to drive interstate with mostly for the next year or so, and i will be getting a 2nd gen rx7.... so the question is, how reliable has a N/A 2nd gen rx7 with a 5speed been for everyone? i plan on getting one with 100k or less miles...
thanks in advance

i bought my 91 n/a with 72k on it and it served me great until about 170k. then the cats got plugged up and it was fine until about 190k. at that point i started to lose compression in the rear rotor, so i put in a new engine.
the only maintenace i did on it was changing the fluids (oil, coolant, trans), spark plugs and changed the battery once. overall a very trouble free car. just keep an eye on the oil level as rotaries are supposed to burn oil.

thanks dude! yeah i am pretty confident that a rx7 will be reliable, my dad thinks otherwise about it, he is in the mind state that a rotary is nothing but problems and it will always be in the shop. now i know this isnt true, when my aunt with a 88 rx7 has 200k miles or so, and has only replaced the clutch, and gotten a rebuild tranny.... along with normal fluid changes and such.
anyways, keep replies comin! this board rules!

The NA FC and well kept TII models should last without major problems into the near 200K range as long as the car has been maintained.
Cars with major mods and lack of owner understanding will need major work much earlier.
Also be aware that as most Japanese cars of the eighties; it will more than likely have minor electrical issues, that are usually pretty simple to fix, but some people will make a big deal about. The more humid climates and harsh weather climates will have more of these electrical issues.
