Refinishing your own wheels?

Has anyone refinished his own wheels on this forum? What would it take as far as tools, chemicals, paint, etc?

Lets start off by finding out what kind of finish do you want?

I imagine it would differ as far as what exactly you mean by refinish.....if you just want to paint them then clean them up and spray away, then use a clearcoat to protect it. What did you have in mind? and what wheels did you want to do this to? I have the 15' wheels on my GXL and I thought about painting them, but not really sure if I want to do that. also thought about polishing them and clearcoating.....think that is the way I will go. To do that I will sand them down and then polish them out. Also--if you do anything, try to post some pics for us. whatever you do, I would only do one rim first to see if you like it.....much less expensive to get one replacement if you hate the results

I bought the 91 TII with original wheels, and they just look dingy and the finish is worn making the wheels dull. I considered painting them, or powdercoating, but then I wondered if I could re-sand and clearcoat them myself. I definitely would need more info before even attempting this....

powder coating would probably last alot longer. I have read somewhere that if you wanted to take the top coat off of an aluminum object u should some type of oven cleaner.

that would help you clean them before you wet sand and paint them.

I sandblasted, in my yard with a simple gravity fed machine, then I painted them "metal" like the finish on the 87 turbo wheels. this was however on my 88se "phonedail wheels" that where white, yuck. So I sandbalsted and had them painted by a guy in his garage, they tuned out totally sweet. it was cheap and I whould highly recommend it. though, powdercoating would look sweet as well.
