Rebuilding a S4 turbo

before i use the turbo on the GSLSE project, i want to rebuild the stock S4 turbocharger ill be using. Doesnt seem like much information on this exists when i was rumaging through old posts. I am going to do it myself and send it to a balancer about 20 minutes away.

so does the dealership stock the parts to do this? i didnt see anything on sites like mazdatrix.

I was going to use their kit until I found this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=160078161933

Which is the same parts and uses a carbon seal set. I was also going to order the 360 thrust bearing from that same seller and have a local shop balance the rotating assembly.

As a side note, all of the rotating parts are individually balanced but the assembly can be further balanced to make the turbo less noisy and improve spool (not noticeably).

If you mark the parts upon disassembly and nothing needs to be replaced (other then seals/bearings) you shouldn't need to re-balance the assembly. I need to replace the exhaust turbine shaft assembly so I have to have it re-balanced.

Reted posted a turbo rebuild document explaining how its done. It's thorough.

I reposted it on my site: http://www.cochran-racing.com/turborebuild.doc

Actually it was me who originally posted that, and I must've posted the link to it a dozen times since then, so it's strange that it wasn't found when "rummaging through old posts"...

Bastard, I was just on there looking for parts... I guess I didn't look hard enough.

Was it advertised as a HT-18 CHRA or generic t3 center?

Disregard that jazz about the ebay kit, I contacted the seller and the carbon seal is different then the one in that kit. Total with a 360 thrust bearing it's 96 dollars for the rebuild kit. (which is still a damn good price).

So how are you guys balancing the shaft assembly? These things spin upwards of 100,000rpm.

Local turbo shop. The parts themselves are individually balanced, it's not necessary to have it done, however it will improve the life of the turbo, and bearings and it'll be more quiet.

I hope noone minds the take over but, would this kit fix my smoking turbo? My S4 turbo is practically gushing oil out of the compression side.

T3 kit

Turbos_R_Us is who I got my rebuild kit from and while most of the seals are good quality I didn't use his snap rings. They're cheap and flimsy. Also the compressor back plate seal was smaller then the stock one, so I re-used the stock one. You MUST contact him for the right HT-18 kit. Also make sure you get a new carbon (compressor) seal for the HT-18, he'll know what you're talking about. And that kit doesn't show any new thrust collar. Might want to see if he can get you a new one of those as well.

I got a 360 thrust washer and it came with a new collar.

If you go with the 360 thrust washer the entire rebuild kit comes out to a little over 100 dollars. But like I said, some of the parts of the kit are junk and you shouldn't use. You'll see what I'm talking about once you tear the turbo down and start replacing things.
