I'm doing a rebuild on a 13B NA and I have a question for you guys. When cleaning your rotors the manual talks about taking care to not damage "the soft material coating on the side surfaces". What does this material look like? My rotors have a gold tint between the oil ring grooves and the side seal and they have something that looks like carbon build up between the side seal and the rotor face. Should this be cleaned off or left on?

Yea, should you use carb cleaner or can you hit it with a wire brush?

Rookie7 - The Video talks about all of this... follow it

PS - If you don't know what the video is, goto atkinsrotary.com and plunk down the 30 for their "How to overhaul your 13b" video... very cool.

Mazda recommends Vaseline when installing the water o-rings. I simply used gasket sealer to hold them on, and to ensure a good seal.

I haven't started the engine yet, so I don't know how good of a job I've done.

I think the "soft" material they are referring to is just the face of the rotors. You just want to be careful with the corners and grooves so they don't get dinged or anything. Clean everything on the rotors; if it belongs on the rotor it won't come off during a nice hard cleansing. Getting the video prolly would've made things easier for me, but hey I like a good challenge anyways

It is usually easiest to stake the key in place. Take the key out, and place a flathead screwdriver perpendicular to the groove, and whack it with a hammer. Now, use the hammer to tap the key into place. Now, tap the gear on upside down so the the key fully seats, then install the gear and chain set as normal.

Thanks for the input. Do you guys recommend getting the rebuild kit from Atkins, Racingbeat or Mazdatrix?

Wow! I think this is probably the best thread I've ever read on this forum in the three years I've been here. It's inspired me to rebuild my T2 engine myself also(Use that money 4 Big turbo). My(Good Friend) says i can do it at his shop and he'll help if I need any. Thank god for that video though I'm sure it's going to come in handy.

BTW: Did you guys use the same housings, bought new ones, or Used ones in good condition

Check out Aaron Cake's thread on rebuilding in the archives too, it's pretty awesome. I just rebuilt mine for the first time and found everything I needed here on the forum by searching, even when I got the bright idea to disassemble and paint my throttle body right in the middle of it

My first rebuild should be going in this weekend, at long last. I was actually impressed at how easy it is to do yourself. I've turned it over by hand and even just listening to the compression, I can already tell a huge difference. (Car was running fine when I took it apart, but had a blown coolant seal) Here's probably the last picture I'll take before it goes back in the car.

Sorry, it came up WHILE I WAS SEARCHING! I'd better stop doing that and just make a new post each time so I won't go through the embarassment of accidentally reviving an old, relevant thread.

I just did a search for engine rebuild and skipped past all the threads with retarded names. How many threads do you really need named "Rotary gurus, please help!" If you actually post what you need help with, you might get help faster, and you'll help out people who search later.

Alright alright, my bad for reviving a hundred year old thread. :P

Here, I'll make it easier for you, just send them back when you're done breaking them.
