Rebuilding 4 piston calipers

Rebuilding 4 piston calipers

I purchased a used set and I'm storing my car soon so I think over the winter I'll rebuild the calipers to make sure I get full usage outta them. Is it expensive or hard to rebuild them and has anyone done it themselves?

If none of the pistons are rusted in it is quite easy. you can get the rebuild kit which does both callipers for about £20. once you have the callipers off block of the hole where the brake line goes (must be air tight) and place a chunk of wood or something in the groove where the disc would normally be between the pistons. now remove the bleed nipple and feed compressed air in here and the pistons will pop out. changing the seals is dead easy, i don't know if it matters but i put each piston back in the same place it came from.

As above, but I leave the bleeder in and supply air through the brake line threaded hole. If any pistons are stuck, and most likely if they are it will be the lower ones (condensation), you'll need to move the wood around so as more pressure is exerted against the stuck pistons. You'll see that the free pistons will come out, then no air to push the others out. You can clean up the bores, pistons with crocus cloth or the like if only minor imperfections. Heavy pitting new caliper needed.
Actually pretty easy and inexpensive, but does take some time to do it right.

for cleaining ot the bore go to your local auto parts store and pic up a brake caliper hone cheap to buy and very effective

So what happens if the pistons are rusty, does that mean it's just harder to get them out of can you not rebuild them?

Both-The pistons are seized to the bores. They will be more difficult to remove, but calipers could still be good. After removing the pistons, check both piston and bore for pitting. Minor imperfections that can be removed by running a hone, or lightly running crocus cloth or the like, around the bore, can make the caliper useable. Heavy pitting/rust no good.
