Rebuild or Turbo II?

Okay I need to come to a decision on whether to rebuild my engine or just put a turbo II engine. So I figured I would talk to the pros.

My first option is to rebuild my engine. I have a 1990 S5 six port. It smokes in the morning before it is warmed up totally, which I believe is an oil seal. If I were to rebuild I would want to get do a streetport.

Option 2 is getting a Turbo II engine, ecu, harness, pump, hood, etc. I have found a Japanese Turbo II engine, ecu and tranny for 950 Shipped. Unfortuantely the harness is cut so I would need to get a harness and the other stuff.

So if you were in my position, what would you do? Which is more bang for the buck? A rebuild and streetport would be about the price of the Turbo II engine, but that is assuming I do a lot of the labor. Am I going to have a lot of install headaches with the TII swap?

I am sorry if this has been brought up, I did try to search

some people will say that you take a big risk on a used jspec engine since it is used and has sat for an extended period of time....yada yada and that is a very valid point. it really depend os what you want out of the car. if you want reliability and no major risk, get yer engine rebuilt and maybe do a few uprades at the same time. if you want the pleasure of having boost then the jspec would be nice. keep in mind if you do a turbo swap then you will probably need a TII tranny, drive shaft and rear end.......they aren't absolutely needed but i personally wouldn't trust it. if you get lucky and get a decent engine that will last a bit and find a good deal on the rest of the TII driveline then the turbo swap can have a lot of bang for the buck.

I ordered a jspec and and found a full TII driveline and went ahead and did the swap. i fortunately got an engine that doesn't smoke, has great compression and i've been driving on it for about a year with no issues. did all the work myself and it wasn't too bad at all.

good luck and have fun
