Rebuild plus turbo of NA S4
I was wondering if any experienced tuner could help with my future plans. I bought a blown NA s4 and plan on turbo+rebuild. Aarons page plus many others on turbo to na conversion are great but what could i do differently since im gonna rebuild too. Any suggestion on type of port and such would help. I was planning on using a s4 TII turbo for clearence reasons but I think some have done the install and are now looking for more. Should i just go upgrade right away? I am trying to set a goal but i need to know what the NA trans can hold and still stay together. I have a good background and have lots of machine shop access so the extra fab of a NA to turbo doesnt scare me. Turbo suggestions? Upgrade from the start to save cash? Trans capabilities? Thanks a lot.

upgrade from the start, just keep the boost low. NA trannies, in my experience, are junk. you will kill it fast.
Your best bet as far as porting is to get TII housings.
if you don't want to do that, you will have some tricky work to do in adapting the 6 port system to forced induction.... you can't really use the aux actautors and sleeves and all that crap under boost, so you will have to junk the whole system.
also while you are in there, get rid of the exhaust diffusers, they are a retarded idea. you can break them off with a big screwdriver and then grind the rest of the material out with a dremel or whatever you use for porting.

Hey i was actually hoping you would reply you seem to be a very informed tuner. I have been a member on this site for about a month and in that time this is the my first post all i have done is search my s4 na to turbo conversion and found great info. I just wanted some opinions from anybody who has done what i am in the process of, and if they wanted to upgrade after they put on a stock s4 turbo. I know on Aaron's page he is upgrading and this is why i have concerns. I have also been searching the strength of the NA tranny and i know there are posts but i couldnt seem to get a good search for it, so i just read a lot and still didnt find what i was looking for.

Since you are doing the rebuild I would just get T2 irons and manifolds off the forums, s4 irons usually run $40 a piece, and hell I have the manifolds for cheap. It seems the reason most n/a owners slap a turbo on is because they don't want to take the motor out.

well... if you want a little more detail...
tranny:
i blew 5 of them, thats right, 5 in my olf NA. granted, i was running probably right at or slightly over 200 horsies, but still...5 trannies? that was witht he stock clutch too. and while i drive way too fast, i am not hard on trannies in particular.
aux ports:
they serve no puropse with a forced induction car, other than to change the timing, which also isnt all that important. they will increase turbo lag, decrease top end power, and may not work correctly under boost. 6ports work great for NA, but are more harm than good in a turbo'd car.

I would recommend waiting for a Turbo II to pop up for sale.
