Rear vented rotors?

Hello everyone,

I have a 90 gtu.

Just got some new brake rotors in. I ordered solid rear, but they sent vented. I was wondering what needs to be changed to fit the rear vented brake rotors? Are they for t2 calipers? Is that the only part that would need to be swapped? Is it pretty straightforward/easy?

thanks,
Rob

You will need to swap the calipers with a car that originally had 4 piston fronts & vented rears. Check the FAQ for which models had them, it's not just turbos.

I always thought there were only 1 type of rear caliper, but I could be wrong.

You are wrong.

There is one caliper for non vented rears and one caliper for all vented rears.

GXL, Turbo & Convertible S5 models had 10.7 inch vented rear discs, while the GTU had 10.3 inch non-vented rears. The vented discs are thicker, so the caliper has to be wider, and the increased rotor diameter means the caliper has to mount farther out.

thank you guys.

so...
The larger rear calipers will obviously fit on my 90 gtu. The one post says that they mount out further to accomadate the thickness of the vented rotor. Is this just the design of the thicker rear caliper or do you need to make sure and get any other parts/ fab work??

thanks.

P.s. i found that link earlier while searching and skipped right over the important stuff in my haste...doh! lol

You need to get the calipers and caliper brackets from a vented rear rotor equipped car. The caliper is wider as has been pointed out, and the bracket moves the caliper out radially to accomodate the increase in rotor diameter and it has a thicker slot to accomodate the extra width. You shouldn't have any fittment problems with wheels unless you're already seriously close to the calipers. Any 5 lug stock wheels will fit.

You should really get the 4 piston front calipers at the same time so that you don't end up with too much rear brake bias.

There are a lot of posts on this. Search for "4 piston brakes" to get an idea of what you're in for.

The 4 piston calipers are like the single piston caliper and mounting bracket all in one. There is no mounting bracket so to speak. The brake lines are different in front, but you can use single piston lines on 4 piston calipers.

bump:

can you use a the 4 lug rear caliper bracket in conjunction with the 5 lug vented rear disc/caliper?

I have 5 lug swap for my car but I'm lacking rear calipers and rear caliper brackets, I can get new calipers but I don't want to have to hunt down some rear brackets...
