Exclamation Rear lights dont go on at night...brake lights and turn signals go on though.

Ive noticed when I am driving my back lights and liscense plate lights arent on...and they only go on when I brake or use my turn signal...I looked on the boards for some help...but didnt find any...any help would be awesome! I have a 1986 rx7 GXL....

edit... I found this under the FAQ's "My tail lights don't work, but my head lights do
The light switch connections may have burnt out. Check the back of the light switch. If they are burnt, you will need to replace the light switch and light switch harness."

how can I check this out...I am really new at fixing stuff in my car...so I have no idea where this switch is...and how to tell if that is the problem...since my brake lights work...

not as technically savvy as others on the forum but i would suggest you look behind the cluster surround and check the wiring that runs to the headlight switch.
not sure which wire is the one you need, but if you cant find it i can look in my shop manual and see what it says.
on that note, i'd suggest buying or downloading one, if you can find it.
very helpful.

where is that...

where can I find the cluster surround? Are you implying that the wire may be disconnected or loose? Thanks for your help so far...

it's possible. disconnected, loose, burnt out...
i had a similar problem when i wired in a set of guage faces. a wire came loose.

so the instrument cluster surrounds your gauges and has all the ***** for your headlights, wipers, blinkers and such.
So you'll want to remove the screws that hold the surround in place, i think there should be one under each side and three in the gauge area.
then you can disconnect all the wires/plugs going to the ***** and switches and pull out the surround. from there check the wires going to the **** that controls your lights.

my inside dash lights works fine...

So to fix this...I need to unscrew my dash setup to check the wires out?

first and for most check your fuses underneath your dash, if their all good..

take off your cluster bezel, its three screws, after that take it off and disconnect the plugs from the switchs on your bezel, and looked at the wire harness to see if there are any burns or if anything looks as if its grounding out. and if that looks fine and nothings looks melted or grounding out on something, its most likely gonna be your switch look around and see if you can find another one, and if not theres a couple people on the forum that could probably rebuild it for you, or a how to do it thread.
