rear differential change

I currently have a series 5 gxl that i have destroyed my spider gears in my rear diff.
Will my axles fit up to a series 4 with a lsd. i have read that lsd stub shafts are a different size, but are they the same outside width(where they bolt to the half shafts)?

if the s4 diff was built later than the vin change point then the outer lengths are the same
if the s4 diff is pre the s4.5 vin change then the outer lengths will not match

Didn't know that, I swapped my S5 open diff for a S4 LSD and had no problems..just a pain in the butt doing it in the backyard.

I didn't think the non-turbos had the S4 vin-change stub axles issue, but they might have.

it was some-time in '87 when the turbo stub axles got shorter (and the axles got longer)

Here is a picture of the T2 stub axle change:
