Ready to buy.... But....

I have an '88 convertible 5-speed with about 46,000 miles which is stock and almost showroom new. With the generous return of my money seized by the IRS over the past year I'm now ready to upgrade the intake, exhaust, and ECU.

Before I shell out any cash, however, I wanted to run my plan past you guys and see what you think. It's not all that complicated, I guess, but I want to make sure I'm right before making any changes to my baby.

1. Bonez 2.5" SuperFlo System cat: $315 from rx7.com.
2. Racing Beat 50mm cat-back dual: $576 from mazdatrix.com.
3. Reprogrammed ECU: $250 from autothority.com (I've already purchased a used ECU that I can send for programming, so I'll be able to keep my original stock one just in case)
4. Cone filter from somewhere, with homemade cold-air box.

I'm thinking I should be able to do all this and have it installed for around $1600. My biggest question is the ECU - Is the Authority chip a good one, or what other alternatives would I have instead?

Thanks for the assist....

A/.

lol do it yourself bro don't listen to this guy. Learn somthin while your at it. The best way to learn is to do things yourself. Just be careful and research before you blow up your FC. Generaly I have found many things about the RX-7 to be very simple and straight forward.

I don't understand the question.... $1200 parts, plus shipping and (high estimate, maybe) installation is about $1600 or so.

Or are you suggesting that I should be getting much more for my $$ then a complete exhaust replacement, intake and ECU? If so, that's exactly the sort of thing I'm asking about.... What should I be getting for my money?

Do you HAVE to pass emmisions?

If not then get a race pipe. Why do you want a reprogramed ECU? What will is do better? I am just getting another S-AFC you can find them on E-bay for less than 300 dollars shipped with insurance. I just got unlucky. an intake would be like 80 dollars my exhaust cos me about 1330 shipped to my door. and the S-AFC was 290 with two day shipping and insurance. that is a little more but if you don't mind switching exhaust to pass emmisions(or dont have to pass then you will get better performance) the If you are reprograming the ECU so you don't run lean then the S-AFC and somedyno time can fix that. Although you would need an A/F guage or a wide band for the tunning.

The reprogrammed ECU is good for 12HP @ the rear wheels in a stock car, according to the company's dyno, and maybe a bit more with the upgraded intake and exhaust.

I'm not going to dump the cat completely.... I don't want to change the exhaust just to get it inspected, and I'm not looking to race or anything like that.... I just want it to have a bit more 'pep'. The wider tires, power steering, and extra weight of the convertible makes it seem a bit sluggish compared to my old '86 base model.

Where did you order your fiberglass cold air box from?

I've just spent a few hours searching and reading the forums about the different single-chip upgrade ECUs, ant there's a ton of threads about chips but I couldn't find anywhere someone did any comparative testing, or even talked about the differences between the chips:

Autothority...
MDRace...
ELPrototypes...
SuperChips...
SASRacing...

...And even one or two others. Are these all the same chip being sold by different retailers? If not, what's the difference? Which one's best? Cheapest? Does anyone have any praises or horror stories to offer?

the S-AFC is worth 15rwhp with dyno tunning. there was a guy here just a while ago that had a dyno sheet on it.

I believe that if you just want to run something for the fuel just get the S-AFC anddo some tunning. Like I said I got my first S-AFC for less than 300 dollars on E-bay. Shipped and with insurance.

just remember with the cat-back that you're paying 90% for sound only, the other is for flow. Cat-backs don't make much difference on n/a
