rb exhaust question MA inspec

I have a 87 na and my racing beat exhaust is to loud.

I have the header, Y pipe, and both mufflers. I'm running a catco highflow cat. I was wondering what some other people have done to quiet the car down and still pass emissions.
I was thinking about cutting the end of my header off and installing a cheap ebay muffler just to quiet my car down and maybe ditching a highflow for a reg cat.

The guy at the inspection station looked at me, typed my car info in and then failed me for safety and emissions. He first tried to tell me my exhaust was rotted and then he said it was to loud.

I'm in dire need of help please assist me.

Wow, you failed with a RB exhaust?

Maybe buy the Bonez high flow if you think that's an issue. But to tell you the truth, the only way to get quieter is to probably go back to stock. RB exhaust's are hella quiet dude.

Use one of these as a pre-sliancer http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/02race.asp

You'll notice a huge diffrance without losing any performance

do you have the RB mufflers? those are actually good mufflers for sound reduction.

i'm running RB collected header -> Magnaflow offset stainless steel muffler -> 2.5-inch straight pipe -> Magnaflow polished stainless steel muffler.
it's loud but it's not too bad. i can keep it quiet when i need, but it gets quite loud at full throttle.

I am def going to do this, but do you think I need to ditch my highflow cat to pass sniffer or should I hook up a 12 volt airpump(walmart tire pump) to my splitair pipe?

Take it somewhere else. That inspection mechanic is full of ****. Did he even test your car for emissions or did he just fail it because he wanted to? The fact that he tried BSing you off the bat about it being rotted would be enough for me to tell him to go **** himself and get it done elsewhere. Failed it for safety? WTF? Yea, he's out of his mind or has a large tree trunk up his *** and is just pissed at the world.

My n/a didn't fail inspection once and I had a number of exhaust systems. The final system I had was a RB header/pre-silencer and Apexi N1.

Bottom line: Go somewhere else.

Thats such BS man. What sucks tho is if he gave you a rejection sticker in MA your saposed to go back to him. Most stations will just tell you to go back.

You can make a silencer for your muffler itself, some come with it. N1 Muffler In the picture you can see the silencer, it's the **** plug looking thing. You can always fabricate one of those with some scrap sheet metal and some tac welds. I meen it won't be that great but I doubt even the guy will notice. The when he gives you a sticker walk outside, give him his money, take the silencers out, and floor it.

lol peace

I agree you should take the car back and try a different inspector. I can't believe the wide variety of testing methods/comments I've gotten here in Maryland where I did fail a couple times in previous years.

On the other hand, are you sure the exhaust and all gaskets are in good condition? If you're getting excessive noise with the RB cat-back system, header and a Catco cat, there may actually be something wrong. I once had a worn gasket between my Bonez cat and my Borla exhaust and the noise level went up quite a bit. Check the gasket areas for any signs of black soot, or feel for escaping air (without actually touching anything hot, obviously) while the car is running.
