Rack and pinion steering

I am looking at a 86 NA. I can pick it up for $1200. I just have one question. The rack and pinion i sleaking oil from what the machenic that i brought it to said that it was leaking anyway. I dont know much about it though. How bad is it. If i get it before any damage is done. Or if the damage has already been done what am i looking at.
Thanks in advance

As long as you keep fluid in it, it will be fine.. If it's like, a huge leak, and all the fluid leaks out, you may damage the pump or the rack itself. If it's just a hose, those are pretty cheap. Worst case, you can get a new (used, rather) rack+pump for not tooooo much.. Maybe 200$? www.thepartstrader.com

Or, you can always swap it for a non-power steering rack, and save a few pounds.
