Rack and Pinion
How hard is it to replace the rack and pinion? what all is involved in it? any special tools? what needs to be taken off to get to it? I know that rebuilding one takes a lot of special tools and stuff but don't know if replacing one would. trying to figure out whether I should put in a manual rack and take the power steering out or if I should keep the power steering. ok thank you goodnight.

The other option is to just remove the power steering pump and keep the power rack. You can either cap the lines or just hook them together. The steering effort really isn't that bad, and you can actually feel the road.

I know the effort isn't bad, the p/s hasn't been working since I got the car. but if I intend to learn how to drift then I could imagine it might be a bit hard without power steering. I don't know.

my race car had PS when it was a street car. In the build up we just got as much of the fluid out as possible then used silicone to cap the ports. It has never leaked and the effort is not bad. If the rack you have is shot and it has to come out it is not hard to do. 4x 14mm bolts hold it to the subframe, 12mm pinch bolt to the steering shaft and the tie rod ends. Then it should fall out and hit you in the fourhead or that's what mine did!
