R12 A/C recharge substitute

Has anyone has any success with R12 substitutes in their 2nd Gen? The A/C in my second gen is in need of a recharge and R12 is nearly impossible to get here. I checked Ebay and everyone wants EPA certification! Anyone know of a working substitute? Do you have to evacuate the system before charging it with the substitute? Thanks for the help!

I am using Freeze 12, its a direct replacement for R12. But you still need an EPA cert to get it. Here is a hint for you, the EPA cert only costs $15 to get, and its available online. The answers are even given to you, you just click the links on the test...
