R&R'd working trans, now lost 2nd gear??

This is a weird one...

Okay did a pan gasket job and took the engine out to do so. S4 turbo trans. All good and dandy clutch/trans/drivetrain prior to removal.

now I get everything back in and the shifter wont let me go into 2nd gear, I can reach all other gears but it is like 2nd is blocked out, you cant even force it in even if you tried.

Has this happened to anyone else or is my car just pissed at me? lol

everything shifted and worked fine prior to removal.

no grinding no trans barking because you miss shifted, nothing... it physically wont go into gear and like any good rx7 owner I have random extra parts, 3 different shifters have the same result...

Check the trans for bent shift forks. I haven't been into an RX7 trans beyond the bell housing, so don't quote me on that, but it's a possibility.

you prolly bent it by leaving the shifter and exhaust on when removing/installing engine/trans causing the gear the "chip a tooth"

harr harr

and because you owe me money, karma

took the exhaust off this time...

I'm gonna crack open the access panel when I get free time, otherwise I'm running the next rallycross in 1st gear

I would guess you can solve the problem by removing the tail shaft.

If the shifter got jarred you can screw up the alignment of how it operates. Should be very apparent when you pull the tail shaft. If not, its deeper.

Shift forks misaligned. Sometimes happens when trans' are bumped or jostled hard, such as during a wreck, shipping, or hard r&r. Take the trans out, remove the shifter extension housing and tailshaft, and reassemble, being sure the shift rod/selector is aligned with the forks properly.

remove the tail shaft and make sure the shift forks are in the neutral position. they each have three settings, the middle is neutral on all of them. if on of them are not in neutral, the shifter will not engage that gear.

Will it go in gear with the engine off?? you might have to roll the car back in forth a few inches.

If it will go in to gear with the engine off but not when it is running you might haves sum how shaken off the brass ring that goes between gear and syncrho, this would make engagement with the engine runnin inpossible. how you did this on an r&r job?? I don't know, maybe its been broken in the trans for a while but sumthing you did't on the r&r knocked it loose.

If this is the case,( you CAN get it into gear with engine off) get sum long *** pullers and sum snapring pliers, you have a tranny to fix

If it isn't and you are still locked out with the engine off ingnore my above rant and continue on your day. PEACE and good luck.

p.s. Rally racing in a rx7 has got tobe a blast, I would never take my fd in the dirt, charge hard

Found the problem, its well.... yeah I'm an idiot...

Okay so I filled the turbo trans from the eyelid access ports up top. (because its easier with the trans out, that and I have an extra yoke for towing and general R&R so I don't need to drain/fill fluid all the damn time) I must have grabbed the wrong bolt because the one I installed was just long enough for it to inhibit the shift shaft from going into 2nd...
